Thread: Where are the herds!?

Okay, instead of hijacking ElChubacabra's thread anymore than I have I think I will throw this one out for general consensus.

Basic idea is we need herds in game. Wehave spawns of 2-5 creatures at attime but nothing major. I would love to go find a herd of bantha and try to take down a few without all of them aggoing on me. And if they did its possible to get trampled to incap or death. Now, what would make things more interesting would be being able to use mounts to hunt them more effectively without being trampled.

I guess the biggest problem with this idea is frames per second. I dont know what kind of a hit it would take to have 30 bantha charging you but it cant be worse than Coronet.

But all of this brought up an idea for a CH to be able to train a "battle mount". These pets would be more aggressive and do more damage. Perhaps even had a bit of armor for looks and usefulness. From these particular mounts a player could do 2-3 specials that have to be pretrained from a CH.They could be better fighters allowing for PvP action which the CH's are complaining they are useless in now. Also, if a player was fighting from a mounted position for too long the mount would tire quicker and wouldnt be able to inflict as much damage as they were carrying a load.

And a player being able to do a handful(not all) of specials would really make things interesting. Imagine a pikeman really useing that pike for once. Rifleman could use Concealshot if their mount was trained to kneel and/or steady up before shooting to ensure a solid shot. Accuracy while riding could be an interesting mod addition. The only person who could lose out would be TKM but hey... they dont need no stinking mounts right?

I did drop by the CH forum and threw out this idea but only the correspondent replied and he didnt seem much enthused.

Just throwing out some ideas for discussion since I think the top 6 have been pretty much talked out.

Your thoughts?

Herds I'd love. But they really need to move around. Something like a non-static lair that spawns a lot of creatures. Trampling is probably a bit hard to put in (and possibly a bit unfair). The CH war mount idea is unlikely to happen (at least anytime soon) because of how long it would take the Devs to add it. It would be interesting, though. Each mount could have its own advantages, with a Rifleman wanting a nice slow steady mount and a Pistoleer wanting something quick.

As for the herds, I'd want wandering herds of creatures (like banthas, sharnaffs, andbolle bols). It would also be nice to have a few prowling predators (same idea but only 2 or 3 creatures instead of 20) that hunt down some of the herds. Keep the cities with their static lairs but have the wilds seem a bit more wild.

The herd idea is awesome, and having predators hunt the herd is another great one. I always love when I hunt bolmas and lizards (forgot the name :smileysad start attacking them to because bolmas are, well, their food.

Unfortunately, I doubt war mounts will be implemented any time soon. The Devs already have a lot on their plate, and it would take some time to resolve issues about kiting and other stuff.

Anyway, great post!

i love this idea. other than traveling to other cities, vendors, or POIs why go out over 3km from town? to hunt herds!!! this would be like those big groups of 10 stormtroopers that walk around thinking they are so cool (i love killing them all by the way). it would be a great reason to get big hunting groups together and get alot of xp. the first day i started i had no idea what i was doing and i got a 8km delivery mission. so what other to do than walk to it. ofcourse i didnt know how long it would take. and i was surprised by all the empty space imbetween these towns. although the flora is very nice there is nothin out there. i think herds of monsters needs to be put in the game ASAP!

It's a shame your first day wasn't closer to launch. In my first few days I ran several of the long delivery missions. And all I could think about was how alive the worlds felt (and how I loved having terrain negotiation and burst run when the red mobs started chasing me ). Now that they added cities, you don't get that feeling anymore. Something like this could help.

This is an old idea that will probably never be put in. http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=TestCenter&message.id=64578 look at this, we did a pretty good discussion on herds, night/day creature cycles, NPC patrooling AI.

Nice update on that Sal. I just wonder if the devs ever replied as if this wasnt possible at all or just at the bottom of a very long to do list.

To my knowledge then never did. What makes me mad is that it was actually good info instead of the

"nerf this leet profession"

"this game sucks"

"give us more uber loot"

"this game sucks"

"un nerf us"

Common ranting and stupid things that people where posting at the time.

same here I love this idea.

A way to make it less computer-intensive would be to code herds as a single dynamic lair entity. It's comprised of a huge number of animals, but their actions are based on a parent AI rather then 200 individual AI's. If interaction is needed, the herd parent AI decides what to do, run, fight, ignore, stuff like that. The whole group then does so. It acts as a lair because it will spawn individual AIs for a given interaction. If the herd decides to run, an individual could be spawned that is a little slower then the rest and falls behind. If fighting needs to be done, the whole herd might trample you, but perhaps only a number of male animals come to attack. When the interaction is over, the individual AI returns to the parent AI and the herd is again a single entity, where it was at most 10 different entities, the herd and 9 animals making their own decisions. 10 entities (and more) is quite possible to have, I'm sure we've all been surrounded by 10 rasps before

The one thing that can't very well be done is reducing graphics intensity. SWG doesn't tend to run that well on most systems as it is, but having 200 animals in your vicinity might complicate things a tad. Herds could be automaticly reduced in graphics quality, but that's not exactly an ideal solution.

Well they all wouldnt halfto be huge herds, say.

a herd of 5-10 is a common herd often seen with creatures ranging from very weak to moderately strong

a herd of 10-20 is not as common but still out their often composed of a assortment of stronger animals

a herd of 20-30 is very uncommon and is unlikely to be seen but once in a great while usually composed of strong animals tho they are not the strongest or most dangerous sighted

a herd of 30-50 is a very Rare herd usually composing of very strong creatures due to the constant fight for food a herd this size would have.

I think a assortment of sizes of herds would make for great fun wether you be a newer player or a hardened vet.

Also I dont think haveing 50 creatures in noe area would be so bad, if youve been to some of the sronger caves like the geno theyre are around 50 creatures of very strong stature all on your radar at once.
