Thread: Combat Profession Help Please
For pure defensive ablilty which is what you would need without medical buffs, you might be better off with fencer. It would give you the best def. you will not be able to put out the dmg of say a heavyswordsman, but you would be able to last against just about everything you would be hunting. With the 80% Kinetic resist comp now available, I have heard of Master Fencers tanking Adult Krayts.
You might see what def. you can stack by browsing the TKA tree and the Fencer tree. I personally prefer mastering a profession, but you might best be served by spot picking certain trees from the melee professions. They all have the best melee defense compared to ranged combat. If you hunt smart and time is not a factor, you might look into Master Rifleman. It offers the biggest bang (Pun intended) for your buck out of the ranged combat classes you can master with Master Ranger. But it takes a certain degree of know-how to get the most out of it. You can conceal shot your way through just about anything, but that takes forever.

Fencers, while not being able to drop things quickly, they keep standing. TKA is a good choice as well. I think both of those profs might suit your needs.
On the other hand, any profession will really do you well with the right tactics. I have soloed Rancors unbuffed with Master Pistoleer, I ran up and down hills, trapped them and had a great time.
good tactics and knowing your strengths and weaknesses will really get you far in any prof.
i am a master heavy swordsman and i love it! i may not have as much def as fencer but i can deal out hella damage. plus it has multiple area attacks for when you get surrounded. also i have just picked up novice rifleman which is the perfect complement for swordsman because swordsmen use head or mind hits a lot which so do riflemen. so while the creature runs at me (if he finds me) i am taking out his mind then when he gets up close i finish his mind off with some good old cleaving
Chymera
Master Scout/ Master Swordsman/ Novice Rifleman/ Medic 1123
but, definately, TKM will increase your hunt time and self-sufficency very nicely.
I migrated my stats so that my mind/focus/willpower are all maxed, my secondaries are all at 450 and the rest go into health and action. This serves me well for the moment.
Pistoleer is a very viable option, if you are willing to be sneaky and tactical.
The health shots coupled with a peace and maskscent can be used to aggro one creature (not person) probably 90% of the time. 5 rancors can be done, one at a time. The higher end shots, while doing less damage, are fast, so the damage evens out. The biggest plus is that except for cold and electricity, pistols cover the entire spectrum of damage.
I dallied with TK, brawler left me dissatisfied. I am rapidly returning to Pistoleer, altho the forum is peopled with morons.
Also, traps are made for the pistoleer. My standard tactic - healthshot2, healthshot3, stopping shot...peace. Wait for the aggro, pop a stopping shot, throw a Pdart... critter slows... finish him off. If by chance they get in close - pistolmelee and beat feet.
I rarely use doc buffs, don't wear armor. I do have mod'd clothes, novice medic, and will use food buffs. My pistols are top of the line and I tend to use powerups here and there.
Good luck
JB
