Thread: Does gathering Milk have to be so time-consuming?

Yeah, I know we're lucky to even have milk in the game! But hey, it's been in for a while now. Why does it have to stink so bad?

I've looked all through the Ranger and Scout FAQs and I have found nothing about milking. Great stuff on fishing, but not milking.

So far, milking has been a horrible experiencefor me. The creatures wander around and server lag lets them get too far away and break the milking process (takes like 20 seconds per attempt to get successful result). It just takes FOREVER!

If someone has made a guide, or has some advice, I'd be most grateful...

Milking as I know it:

  1. Find animal to milk.

  2. Maskscent or coceal.

  3. Grab teat.

  4. Follow critter as they wander the wilderness with you holding their teat.

  5. Acquire milk OR chase the critter down becuase they warped.

  6. Repeat until critter runs dry.

  7. Find another critter OR give up becuase milking does indeed stink.

Wow...the sarcasm is thick in this post! On a more serious note, there is no guide on miling becuase there really doesn't need to be. It isn't a Scout or Ranger skill except that maskscent or conceal is necessary. People hate to fish, BUT they like to fish more than they like to milk things. The one tidbit of mostly unknown information that i will give you that you have to be masked or concealed to milk, BUT since a Ranger can conceal anybody, anybody can milk (i.e. if a Ranger conceals a person that does not have any Scout at all, that person can milk a critter.

At least it beats eggs ... anyway, it's a problem that you can't simply /follow the creature, you have to move with it, or better, anticipate it. By the time /follow gets around to moving you, it's already too far...

I think it is so that the higher level creatures give more milk, though i have never tested this. You might check this out, could save some time

Don't forget about postmortem milking. After you've milked the live critter dry, simply slay it, and /harvest milk on it. You'll get milk at around your normal harvest rate for hide or bone. The only downside is living with yourself afterward-- it does make you feel kind of dirty. But hey, more milk.

For some reason I actually prefer milking to fishing (although ditah managed to teach me to fish properly a few weeks ago, so its not as bad as it once was ), I generally gather about 5k of milk a week just from randomly milking things for fun (!).

Basically milking is pretty simple, my tips would be:

  1. make sure to /mask, and if youre not sure how long youve been masked do a /mask;/mask to reapply (nothing worse than losing /mask while milking)

  2. I always milk the creatures laying down first, they're easy, and theyre sure to stand up if you leave them

  3. for standing creatures, i stand about 1m-2m in front of them and start milking, if they start to move stay in front of them, this makes it easier to be less than 5m from them when the next update comes

  4. remember you only have to be closer than 5m when the message comes up (about a 5 sec wait between messages)

  5. you can milk more than one creature at a time

  6. combine stacks in inventory periodically, you dont want to have a full inventory when you finish milking

  7. when everything is dry, kill it all and /harvest milk off them, dont forget veghash, every little bit helps

i think this is only true in the 'post mortem' milking (/harvest milk) but not the milking while alive which seems to be entirely random in giving stacks between 30 and 80....

you can harvest milk on a corpse?

Now this is the kind of information I'm looking for! Can you harvest milk and meat? Oh, my, this is probably a bug and will be 'fixed' next patch now.

Calc, thanks for the input. Autofollow not working for milk was the most annoying bit. An easy Dev fix for live milking would be to increase the range to 20m or so to make up for the laaaaag...

And I have found that live milk totals do vary with the level of the creature. Last night, some red-con triple-trunkedoliphants on Lok were shooting out 113 units of milk per 20 secondsqueezing session. Weird thing, the milk stack maxes at 100, it made a second stack of 13 units, which can then be stacked in the inventory manually as normal. Having eggs, fish and milk autostack in the inventory would be a nice touch one of these days.

Lol Ditah taught me to fish too, while camping at the the Theed Bridge. I've tried the walking in front of them thing, but warping is too random to keep up with sometimes. Can you start milking, hop on a swoop, and thereby keep up with a creature while milking? I'll have to try that!

If I wanted to be a dairy farmer I would be playing Sim Farm.

Gathering milk and eggs is at best a mind numbing, boring, crappy, pays blechy, job.

No XP = not doing it.

Now, stick some xp into milking, I would think about it.
