While reading throught the notes on the proposed new loot system, two things caught my attention regarding creature harvesting that directly affects rangers. I can only assume that these statements, both loosely quoted below, hint that the ranger profession will take on a more combat-oriented role with the combat upgrade or that we're just going to be totally emasculated as a profession:
"...the ability to harvest more hides [applicable to all creature resources?] based on skills or buffs really can't be fictionally justified..."
"...making rare creature loots only harvestable by master scouts..."
As a profession awaiting "fixes" in terms of harvesting rates or other hunting-related skills, the above two statements seem to indicate that it just not going to happen. The only other option is that we're headed toward being elite soldiers rather than elite hunters - I think the dev's intent regarding the new loot system speaks loud and clear.

We really don't know. All we know is that the Devs will not be looking at Ranger during the Combat Upgrade (look here). Whatever they end up doing, it looks like we'll be waiting for a revamp for it.

Yeah, I was just reading through the CU thread. What I don't understand is how CH can be considered a combat profession and ranger isn't. Pairing that with the statements above, I simply don't see how we're going to be of any use. I was really expecting us to get some PvP additions to our skill set, now it looks like we're just stuck with wasted skill points. Hopefully someone among the devs will finally check into the EU information regarding rangers and realize that we ARE a combat profession....

I'm guessing you're refering to the Antarian Rangers. The "Ranger" part of the AR was not combat to all of my knowledge. If you were to make a standard AR character you would prolly be (As most are but not for that reason) Master Rifleman/Master Ranger. What set the AR apart from normal soldiers was their survivle skills and tracking skills.
The honest truth is that we shoul not be combat related in our own right. We should get a little more for our skill points but not combat related. However, we should also be worked on a little during the CU due to our traps and rescue ability. Perhaps they will get to this in the Ranger Revamp though. No matter what ranger's will weather the storms and we will be here in the end.

I like the fact the CH are considered a combat profession because instantly that throws the dev response of 'you cannot be a combat class because you only have scout pre-reqs' out of the window.
I think its a good way idea to push ranger and ch in very different directions but both combat orientated. Such as scout gives you the basis to progress then you either use creatures as weapons or tools or the environments as weapons and tools. Ranger obviously would be the later but i cant see why we wouldnt be able to fit into pvp combat.
Our speciality should never be direct damage nukers, instead it should be crowd controlling, stealth movement, planned tactics and the use of ingenious traps to cause damage and achieve these goals.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. you know what is a shame I love my Ranger. Made hime some rifles and took alittle CH to make it fun. But i find him becoming more of Alt now. Not my main.
You know if we dont get love soon I may have to wear those garments that cant be mentioned till they do.

This statement is actually false. The ability to harvest more resources based on skill is very justifiable. If you had taken a shop owner from New York and a French trapper and asked them both to skin a deer of equal sizes, who would come away with more usable hide? Do you think it would be close? The more experience (skill levels) someone has in butchering an animal, the more meat they will recover. This is one of the dumbest statements I've seen from TH.
Hmmm, everyone in this thread is from Eclipse, except Odajja... interesting.

I'm fine with not being a combat-oriented class. However, not only should a Ranger at least have some means of self defense, but shouldn't the "ultimate creature hunter" really be able to hunt? Like with a weapon? And stuff? I just can't see any reason why a class that is supposed to be focused on hunting has no weapons besides traps to hunt with. Hunting means more than locating creatures and avoiding attakcs. It means killing. Ultimate creature hunter = ultimate creature KILLER. Maybe a bow and arrow at least? A crossbow would be cool. I understand the devs not wanting us to be a full-on combat class, but with our skill point requirements I think we could and should be able to actually bring down the creatures we are supposed to hunt without having to master an entire other combat profession. In order to actually be the ultimate creature hunters we have to master not one but two professions. We're really not any more "ultimate" at creature hunting than a rifleman. We're more like the ultimate creature finders.
Some sort of bow hunting weapon is one idea. I would also like to see some creature poisoning abilities that really poison creatures. Or tranquilize them. The outdoor knowledge of Rangers might allow them to create substances that do significant damage to creatures. They don't have to work in PvP (I agree that Ranger shouldn't be a PvP combat class) but it seems like a rather small bone to throw to us Ultimate Creature Locators, eh?
