I'm one of the new players that bought for JTL but realised the ground game isawesome!!!(first month

Just made master scout and master marksman doing really cool sharfnaff hunts (amazing fun) and am looking

onward @ ranger.....

Not sure which ranged line to go down. I really don't want to do "rifle" & am tempted by pistols - just not sure if that works well with ranger??? - i feel bad at ruling out carbines - not sure if that is viable ------> your help & advice would be really useful.

(Please don't 1 star me )

Thanks guys & gals

One star an exuberant newcomer who's clearly psyched about the profession? Perish the thought. Even JB wouldn't do that.

Can't give you any advice on which shooty dealy works best-- I beat things to death with my bare hands. I believe we've got Rangers that specialize in all forms of ranged combat, though, so hopefully one of them will help you.

Glad to hear that you're enjoying scout and are anticipating ranger. Welcome to our forum. There's a lot of wisdom to be found here, and by a lot of wisdom I mean very little wisdom, a definite air of superiority over non-Rangers, and a great deal of useless conjecture. But there's no whining, and that's what sets us apart from all the lesser profession forums.

Again, welcome. And have fun.

Welcome.

Pistols works amazing well with Ranger. The only weapon that isn't available is a cold weapon - and there ain't a lot of animals who are vulnerable to only cold. Going pistols means you need traps, hence you never whine about maxing trapping. Pdarts, glow wire and sharp bone spurs are your friends.

Maskscent and bleed shots mean you can usually draw one aggro out of a herd. One of anything is easy to deal with - three or more usually suck.

I encourage you to play around with the weapons, then drop what you don't want - and drop ranged support as it's freaking useless anyhow. Get novice medic so at the least you can heal yourself in combat.

Most importantly, have fun.

just thought i'd mention some of the pros/cons or carbineer (my most used profession)

Well, since it'd be ranger/carbineer you'd have 0 melee Mitigation, so the two knockdown shots would be very useful to keep enemies away from you (although with marksman you already have a similar skill.. cant remember the name but makes the enemy run away from you.. maybe warning shot..)

the area/cone attacks are pretty cool too, i think the only reason a lot of people rule out carbineer is because of the lack of a stun weapon (pvp) and a specific mind hit (pvp again) personally i think carbines is a great prof, should work well with ranger. It has a good selection of damage types for non-pvp, the ones i use most being heat, acid and energy (pistoleer has these also).

If your definately against rifleman i'd go carbineer. While pistoleer does have good defences they're not that great at giving out damage because they only have light armor piercing while carbines have medium.

its really up to you though, if you think pistoleer looks cool then go with it. I've tried several professions that people said were rubbish and found them really cool (carbineer and pikeman lol.. surprising good combo). It all depends on your play style. The most important thing is to have fun. Try a bit of both professions out to see what you like. You can always drop whichever skill you dont need

Is there a reason you want to rule out rifles?

I am Ranger/rifles and it works very well, I am a relative newcomer though and have not played with other professions, just liked the idea of concealing myself and using a ranged to take critters out (one shot one kill mentality). I can tell you that ap3 of the t21 is awesome for big game hunting, and the acid dmg dxr-6b is an excellent backup and great for pvp. For big game hunting I try to enlist the aid of a melee prof to tank, but solo there aren't too many creatures you can headshot dead before they figure out how to get to you. Getting to master is fairly long and brutal, I didn't really feel that way, but until you get some speed, your attack speed is brutally slow, but once you get the master box, your speed doubles, you get strafeshot2 which is AWESOME, and it is well worth the wait

Hope this helps

I'm a rifleman, and personally I'm about to drop it for melee. Honestly, it's too slow for my blood and the specials aren't that great. You get a dizzy, and mind specials, but there's no real fun (for me). Uber grats to all you Master Riflemen out there that love it. The only profession I hated working on more was Carbineer (which IMO is utterly useless and broken).

I love pistols, just not for Ranger. I don't know. I just don't see a hunter carrying a pistol.

Rifles is good for Marksman, but the lack of speed and the Mind costs kill it.

Then comes Pikeman. I loved Pikeman way before it become a FOTM. It's a fun profession with decent specials. But like rifles, speed and HAM costs become an issue.

Swordsman is also fun, but I find little interest in their specials. However my guild has lots of Swordsmen so it must be effective somehow.

TKA... if you master this profession there is no better. However, the grind to get from Unarmed 3 to Novice TKA deters a lot of players. And for good reason. It's utter pain. But this is one profession that is well worth the pain. Their specials and speed are tops, and Master Meditation is very valuable.

Fencer. Never been a Fencer fan, but never really tried it either. I think people take Fencer for the stun damage and defenses. Fencers get lots of defense mods...lots.

Well there's a little on each profession. I personally like pistols and pikes. But come up wiht your own combination. That's what really makes this game fun.

it would be good to note that the way a profession works with marksman skills and the way it works when your into the elite profession are completely different. I'm guessing you didnt like rifles because of the terrible accuracy while getting rifles 1-4, compared to the accuracy of carbines/pistols. I've been almost every combat profession in the game(not jedi or bounty hunter) and i can definately say that rifles get a lot faster and more accurate, even when you just get the novice skillbox.

i'd recommend that you have a quick look at the following Profession FaQ's (if i get the clickys to work..)

I've chosen to go with Rifles 4xx4 and Creature Handler x4x4 so I can have 1 or 2 nice tanks and some company, but if you want to Master Rifles you could still get CH and 1 tree of 3 giving you access to a nice level 19 BE pet. That way you can stay at max range whilst the pet keeps their attention, and pet stims can be used by anyone so no doc required.

Just my 2 cents (well 2p actually!)

Dureena - I lived in a special place for a while. It was made special by those I knew, butclosest to my heart wereEmekaf and Viridian, I will never forget you both /blowkiss

I don't agree with that statement. All of the specials are working as intended and there is only one that is thought to beredundant (LegShot3 seems to be just like LegShot2). The main problems with carbines is the lack of speed, lack of defenses and the lack of damage types(energy, acid, and heat).

The biggest advantage is state application (except for the whole dizzy not working on creatures thing). You can use specials to apply states and do damage at the same time. This alsoallows you to be more selective in which traps you throw. The Area of Effect specials are also very nice. ActionShot2 is great to do some damage, stick a bleed, and do a posture down at whatever is running at you in one shot.

Anyway, just like everyone else said, whatever seems the most fun is the one you should do.

I was master ranger/master rifles for a bit..... I absolutely loved it.. and at master the speed was MUCH better. However what was lacking was the "eye candy" animations of melee. TKM is what I am now and it rocks!!! there are some things that will be difficult to kill due to high kinetic resists.... but the animations are nice and flashy. It all depends on how you like to play....

do you want to save money and hunt without armor and buffs? rifleman would be good for you then.

do you like be upclose and personal? melee is the way to go.

do you still want to shoot things but want a little more speed? pistols/carbines is your yellow brick road.

cheers.

This gets asked a lot, but basically it boils down to whatever you have the most fun with. Keep in mind that things may be different after the CURB (combat upgrade, revamp, balance, etc)

The Template Pros/Cons post should help you decide.

I'm a master ranger/rifleman but I just prefer ranged combat. Although, I have two swordsman/scout/rangers on two other servers and swordsman is fun to play too.
