Works great. You're already on the move with your carbines and ou can get right up to your harvest a lot faster than the droids. You've got the posture and KD effects to keep hostiles off you and you can area to take out a crowd of critters too. It's tons faster than conceal shot, and prone and masked you can get 3 or 4 solid cripple shots off before they know you're there. The only disadvange is the overlap of the states, but some of the states aren't very effective against creatures anyway. Phecnacine and adhesives are good at also keeping hostiles away from you.

For my money it's the way to go. Only problem is that it seems like rifles were the intended market for rangers.

So far I am a 3-3-1-2 Carbineer. There are definately some advantages and disadvantages to Carbines. This is all going to be PvE stuff as I don't PvP.

On the advantage side, you can apply states as well as deal damage with the shot as opposed to just chucking a trap. All of the specials actually work as intended and only have one special that is considered to be redudnant. You can also crowd control with the right combo of AoE specials (especially Action Shot 2, which does damage, sticks a bleed, and a posture down)and traps. Counterattack, when it works right, is a nice benefit to have as well. The Laser Carbine will definately become the workhorse of your arsenal, with its high max damage and Medium armor piercing.

The disadvantages are kind of big though. The biggest of them is the lack of speed. Master onlygives you +60.This meansyou have to spend a fortune to get SEA's for speed to capas you don't have enoughpoints to get BH carbs andkeep Master Ranger. Another problem is the lack of damage types. Carbines only have energy, heat and acid, which are usually resisted by high-end creatures. Also the EE3, which does heat damage, is onlyAP0.The HAM costs for specials are high as well. It is often stated that a Carbineer can kill him/herself faster than you can (a.k.a. Carbacide). Sure, rifle HAM costs aren't exactly low, but at least theyget a AP3 weapon that can deal out some nasty damage. Combine that with Conceal Shot and you can grind just about anything into dust withouteven being attacked. At least this problem can be overcome by food and/or doc buffs if one was so inclined.Carbineer defenses aren't the greatest either. Other than Counterattack, an MR/MC onlygets+25 vs. Intimidate, +15 vs. Knockdown, +37 Ranged Defense, and +10 Melee Defense.

Yes, the disadvantage part is a lot longer than the advantages. However, half of the disadvantages I listed can be overcome with some cash and effort. The lack of damage types can prove to be a big problem though. For example, as I was kickin' around Endor while chatting with the Wookiees for Life Day, I examined some of the wildlife. I found that most of what I ran into had high resists to my weapons. Even with the critters with a heat vulnerability, I would have problems because the EE3 just can't deal high damage unless its a Krayt version.

So, that's my take on it so far. I still have a bit to go before mastering the profession. I'm enjoying the challenge that it presents and will stick with it until at least the CURB to see where the profession goes from there.

Im doing Carbineer/Ranger too (mainly because I didn't know the differences between Carbines and Rifles when I started and didn't want to start all over again). I play with a Laser Carbine, and the damage I can deal out on regular shots ranges from 350-500. It's good for me. Very rarely do I hunt big game alone, so I usually have a friend tanking up front whilst I take pot shots from the rim. In the end it's pretty good. Now, PvP would probably be a different story, because if you go up against a BountyHunter or a Rifleman, you'll probably be toast...

I see it like everything else in the game, preference. Not alot of Carbineers, tons of Rifleman... Does it affect your decision? Maybe. I'm thinking I'll master Carbineer, and then slowly sub the skills for Rifleman eventually. Just because I want to Master as many profs as I can. In the end, get a Lazer Carbine, and slice through just about anything anyway.

Hope it helps,

Lunga.

i was a crabiner/part ranger, had tracking.. i hated carbines soo much i kept thinking it would just get better and i held out hope till master,, it didnt, as soon as i hit master i went out for a buff session at master hated it soo much i droped the entire carbiner and all of marksmen carbs in one shot.. I started at rifles one and never looked back. Now im a rifleman/Ch and ive never had soo much fun,, though i still have ranger tracking when i lvl up a bit more ill have to drop ranger and all of traping to master rifles, and CH, i also have squadleader, 3-0-0-0 the crawl boost is ubelivable and with skill tapes ohh my god i can crawl as fast as most can run! Yes i know i wont have ranger any more, but ranger isnt a profession its a life style : )

I've never done carbineer, but from a Role-Playing standpoint, I would imagine that Rifles and Carbines would be the weaponry of choice for actual big game hunters in the Star Wars Universe, so i say go for it. if you don't like it, you can always try something else instead.

personally, i like melee combat better than ranged. like when i play knights of the old republic 2, i ALWAYS have either a sword or lightsabre in hand on my active player. i hate picking things off from a distance, i'd rather get down and dirty right in my enemy's face. that's why i've been a TKM for several months now. i am currently dropping TKM for pikeman fora change of pace.

but if you do go for carbines, then good luck, and i hope you enjoy it.

Im a master Ranger and Im 1/1/2/1 as a carbineer .I use a sliced laser Carbine, when I use burst shot 1 or scatter shot I frequently deal over 1200 points in damage, Of course I do have to watch my ham bar closley. I try not to get into serious firefights unless Im buffed up though,And When I do I try to remain at about 50m away.. that gives me a +50 modifier. I chose the carbine because its a good balance between the distance of a rifle and the pistol. Its worked well for me so far no complaints.. Now Im using it for my Jedi grinds...

It's the best! The best I tell you!

Ok, seriously. If you want 2xMaster you're going to be at the bottom of the dmg department. Like me ( YAY! ) unless you can cap speed by other means. At +99 speed we are slightly better than pistoleer, apart from the lack of dmg types available ( Energy, Laser, Heat, Acid ).

States are what make and break a Carbineer. Unfortunately dizzy doesn't work on creatures so that's one out the window. Most of the specials are cone attacks which can get a bit tricky at times ( read: very tricky ).

There's nothing in the Carbineer profession that really augments Ranger, which is why I consider it the worst ranged profession for a Master Ranger, unless you plan on doing contract hunting on low-end creatures but then you wouldn't go Master in the first place.

Currently I'm adding some TKA which helps a lot but it's very disappointing to realize that a Novice TKA does a better job than Master Carbineer when it comes to creature hunting. Not surprising though, since melee is the PvE choice but still disappointing

Doesn't mean it's not fun though! It's a challenge and it's a different playstyle which is rare in SWG these days.

Try it, come join us on the Dark Side of Rangerhoodism
