Thread: Is Making Master Ranger Really Worth It?
Hello All,
I have gone through the grind and am almost a master (hurray, maybe...). I only have a few k left to grind out in camping/survival. I am looking at a few friends that I have that are BH and Commando tho. They can draw the better hunting missions and I cannot. So, because I am the uber hunter, or supposed to be, I am thinking that once I make master I may just give up alot of it. I am thinking of getting more combat skills, like going on to master rifle or switching to BH. Am I missing something? Help me not make a mistake and switch if it is wrong.
1) Our traps don't work correctly. The area traps that are supposed to affect multiple creatures don't.
2) Combat classes can draw better hunting missions than I can.
3) Unless on Dathomir it seems I move no faster than anyone else.
4) Maskscent seems to work better than the camo most of the time, and you don't have to build maskscent.
Anyway, those are my main problems it seems, but I am sure there are more. Please help with input.
Agreed.
I was originally planning on mastering ranger. Was very dissapointed with the traps. At this point i wont be mastering it. The wayfaring line offers hardly anything worthwhile to me. If they fix trapping I will keep it, and tracking, because with the changes to CH coming,I have to master that now instead.
I really hate the fact that I feel I must be a CH to be effective solo at all. Trust me, if there was anyway to be a strong combat solo class without it, I'd do it. I really hope they decide to make all the other proffessions stronger, instead of making CH weaker, cause right now unless your a CH, PVE is really really hard, even with a group.
Plus with pets in your group you can draw better missions as well.
But yea, I agree with mostly all the points made here.

It depends on your play style and who you group with. I have noticed the same with respect to missions, but it doesnt bother me. I just go to a planet and track. I can make more money selling creature harvests and guiding large hunting parties than any missions will pay. If you are into solo PvE combat against larger crittiers, then look elswhere for satisfaction. If you have a regular hunting party or regularly group then stay with Ranger.

I havent noticed the area traps not working properly. Mine seem to hit all the creatures in a small area - and in most cases that is a good thing. The effects, however, on our area traps are very ineffective.
2) Combat classes can draw better hunting missions than I can.
See my first comment.
3) Unless on Dathomir it seems I move no faster than anyone else.
Ranger wayfairing doesnt really add much to our travel speed, but by the same tokenI routinely outrun my hunting parties.
4) Maskscent seems to work better than the camo most of the time, and you don't have to build maskscent.
That is opposite of whatI see (except on Lok, where the cammo kit is not producable due to lack of domestic meat), although I feel that /conceal does fail too often - especially at the master level.
All of the elite skill trees need work. The developers were nice enough to give us some unique abilities early on - giving us some added purpose. Does the class need work to live up to its "master of the wilderness" billing- YES. Fortunately, we have a great correspondant that is working hard to getit working right.
All in all, it boils down to what your personal playing style is and how long you are willing to wait for things to get fixed. Do what you enjoy- after all it is a game. Go play with other skill trees to find something there. If you cant find anything you like better - or - they fix Ranger to your liking, you can always shift your focus back.
Comparing a Ranger's combat abilities to any combat class is an exercise in futility.Rangers are not a combat class.. the ranger skills augment whatever combat class we've taken. At this moment, a hybrid combination will most certainly look more powerful.
My ranger skills compliment my Pistoleer skills. It is my pistol that determines what level mission I'm going to get -- my ranger skills will keep me alive longer
That being said, my character is very wimpy in anything appearing humanoid -- but I'll blame that on the pistol!

Very well said!

"The area traps that are supposed to affect multiple creatures don't."
I have seen the traps work properly... Though it requires that the affected creatures be really close together.
- The last time I used such a trap, the beasties were swarming me... So they were quite near the target.
"Combat classes can draw better hunting missions than I can."
That is the same issue as Entertainer's receiving better Music Gigs when their weapon skill is higher.
- The developers are aware that weapon skill dictates everything when it comes to terminals... But have obviously not formulated a plan of attack yet.

"Unless on Dathomir it seems I move no faster than anyone else."
From my understanding of Terrain Negotiation, it adds nothing to your flat terrain running speed.
- Having never been to Dathomir, is it a flat planet? Or a hilly planet?
"Maskscent seems to work better than the camo most of the time, and you don't have to build maskscent."
I /conceal my companion (a Doctor/Musician) and then /maskscent myself...
- Invariably my concealment will fall before his concealment.
Most likely, peopleemphasize /conceal failure rate to a greater extent because the skill costs material.
- For /maskscent if the skill drops, a player need only wait 15 seconds and reenable it.
Without trying to sound too eliteist, let me say that there are those of us who will be Master Rangers because we believe in the class and what it stands for and we cannot imagine our character being anything else.
Then there are other Master Rangers who will stay with the class only as long as it provides them with the skills they are looking for/hoping for. As soon as they decide that their neighbor the BH or Commando has/does/is more then them, they will give up being a Master Ranger. If they feel that the devs aren't giving them the Ranger they were hoping for, they will give up Master Ranger. If they are susceptible to following the "flavor-of-the-month' profession, they will give up Master Ranger.
You will get two VERY different answers to your question based on what type of Master Ranger you are talking to.
It depends upon where you are, but much of the terrain near the North Outpost is 80+ degree inclines. In these areas the master scouts are significantly faster than others.

I don't consider that elitist - just masochistic.
I love the concept of Ranger, but you are right in that if the one skill (take your pick) I want out of it doesn't work, I see no point in having a line of skill boxes that do nothing except give me a title. Well, truthfully I wouldn't mind it, except I would have absolutely no combat skill without those skill points. Being ineffective at everything I do would be sufficent cause to just give the game up, so for my own sanity I am dabbling with other professions until this one is working better.

Dathomir has much more geography than it knows what to do with. It is basically flat terrain with frequent (and I can't stress that enough) chasms and canyons all over the place. And we're not talking about the little ditches and gullies that you get on Corellia or Talus. These are deep, narrow clefts in the terrain, with sides that are almost vertical.
This can work to your advantage, because as near as I can tell, some (most? all?) of the critters there don't have any sort of Terrain Negotiation skills. So stuff is easy to outrun if you're a Scout/Ranger.
A hit and miss issue with Traps. IIRC it has been Reported.
"2) Combat classes can draw better hunting missions than I can."
As Long as Hunting Missions are based apon a combat skill then it will be an Issue. Ask for an Invite from a group Get your mission then disband . Group with a pet etc. Do what you can to get by.
"3) Unless on Dathomir it seems I move no faster than anyone else. "
Across Flat Land everyone is the same for movement, Cliffs and Hills are where we really Shine, and Crawling. I love Crawling.
"4) Maskscent seems to work better than the camo most of the time, and you don't have to build maskscent."
I've Test conceal against NPC's Quite a bit, From Swoopers to Mauler Masters. It is a great feeling when you can sit there poking a Mauler Master and he doesn't even know your there.
Ironically its Seems to be that Master Ranger is an Instant Aggro from a creature if your masked or concealed ON any of the advanced worlds.
Last night a bounty hunter buddy and I where doing some faction Missions and had to Go threw some quenker lairs, I was aggro'ed twice from 30-35m , he wasn't aggr'ed once. Got me.
"Anyway, those are my main problems it seems, but I am sure there are more. Please help with input."
If you have fun with Master Ranger thats all that really matters. Its part of the Sacrifce of spending all the skill points in the Master scout and on up into ranger.
Now There are lots of ideas to Improve Rangers to be Master's of the Hunt (PVE), Creature Damage mods, extra Defense , CH pet Traps, PVP traps, Hunting Cabin's etc. They are posted threw out the forums.
But as you noted, It is a good Idea to keep the Wheels in motion.
Mess around with it, If you feel that its not Serving your needs and wants correctly you can always unlearn it. or Keep it ,the choice is yours
I love it, Some days I hate it, But i also both Love and Hate my RL Job.
Do what ever Makes you Happy.
