Thread: Ranger for hire.... a question

My friend (a doctor) and I (a master ranger) were thinking about hiring ourselves out to hunting parties. I would track the animals and provide trapping and camping while my friend could heal and buff people. Do you think there is a market for this? Or would we just end up sitting in a city/outpost waiting and hoping for a party to come along?

I think it would be cool to be paid like 20k for our services (which would include buffs and everything ranger).

Let me know what you guys think of this idea.

P.S. Has anyone tried this yet?

There is a market for it, at least on Bloodfin. The key is getting your name(s) out there and building a reputation. The easiest way to do it is to go sit on a higher end planet with FS (force sensative)spawns - make sure your Master Ranger title is up. Hire on to track the FS npc's for people. One or two good nights and your name will get around.Another good option is to drag a party out for a good krayt dragon hunt. Make sure you explain your limitations up front and dont guarentee something you cant deliver - explain it to every new group member as they join.

I get many offers for my tracking services these days - butI prefer working for myself. Although it is fun having a skill that is in demand, you may find that it makes a better part time "job".You will get to see the good side of some players and the really bad side of a lot of others.

Thanks for the reply....

I noticed once I put up Hunt Master as a title I was getting a lot of request to help peolpe. I helped one guy find a Gnarled Rancor baby. It took us 2 hours but we found one. The baby kept despawning and respawning, highly annoying. In return, he is going to give me 300k credits to start a guild.

I know our skills are in demand, but would hunting parties actually be willing to hire my friend and I just to help them? I guess I should take your advice and go to Dantooine or Dathomir and find out.

Thank you once again!

Well...since you asked (and keep in mind other galaxies may be different):

My hunting partner happens to be a master doctor, and yes we do get requests (for payment) to drag groups around...and soley to drag them around/buff/revive them. With the current craze (andI know this next statement is bad for business) and idiots out there that can only think of jedi holocrons you can make far more money than the 20k credits doing exactly what you propose. I made quite a bit of cash last night and only made 2 camps and my doctor only buffed 6 people - niether of us even firedour weapons. As soon as Id find what they were after, they would attack, and while they were attacking id be off finding the next target of opportunity and send a waypoint. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Now that is impressive...

  • Find the target first, and then send the rest of the group a waypoint.

Combines the solitude of Scouting with the group atmosphere... Sweet.

I really like that idea. Thank you for your help. I think my friend and I found our new business.

Definetly might start doing this once I hit master. I've only been paid once to find some NPC's, was some guy on Lok and I didn't even find him. Got 5k for just taking the time... can't beat it.

Yah, this is definitely a viable way to make some money, and is fun too. I have found that as rangers we have two moneymaking posibilities:

1-Track creatures for CHs and combat nutsand lead hunts for money
2-Organize large groups of rangers to hunt for high-demand resources

One is fun and low stress, but doesn't necessarity make a ton of money. Two is VERY PROFITABLE...we started a group on Bria called Rangers of Bria, and in a two hour hunt 5 of us harvested 31K of Endor Wooly that an armorsmith paid us 30CPU for (that's nearly 1 million creds by the way)...and we got paid for the missions too. This works because the resource amounts don't vary based on size of group, so the more rangers the better from a harvesting standpoint.

Yes there are needs for both of you. If he has a doctor title up and you have a ranger one up you will be found out. Be sure to make your character searchable, in your ctrl+p screen. What server are you on? If you're on Bria check out the Rangers of Bria (RoB) post in the Bria forum. Or if not on Bria maybe try to start something similar on your server.

Another good place to sit with a ranger title up, especially master or Track Master, is the mouth of the Krayt Graveyard. I sat there in a camp, and everyone coming into canyon wanting to hunt krayts, stopped in my camp and asked if I could track Krayts. so this way you get some camp xp, you get the opportunity to track stuff for people, and make both money and name.

This is a personal thing for me. I don't like people that use ATST to kill Krayts. So if I see someone who is overt Imp I ask them if they are going to use one. If they actually say yes, I don't help them. I had someone who did that I tracked for. He bugged me for like 2 days while I was doing this, and I didn't track for him again. Like I said, that's just my little thing.

I can confirm that there is a market for this service. I'm only at 1,1,1,2 on the Ranger tree and I was sent an/tell out of the blue to work with a group. Keep in mind I was not advertising or shouting that I wanted to do this they just looked me up and sent a /tell. I was paid the cost of a round trip ticket to Lok, 5000 credits up front, 3 cpu for whatever I harvested and 5000 credits when we were done. This was a great experience for me since I had never even been to Lok. The two individuals that hired me understood my limitations and were very good to work for. It was a little frustrating at times when I would /track and nothing would show up only to have the creatures we were looking for spawn 10 seconds later. I'm looking forward to doing this again!

Just wanted to put my 2-cents in on this conversation. I too just experienced an opportunity to be of service to a group wandering out by the Krayt Canyon. I stumbled on an old PA friend and we hooked up with a grup of 7...including one very masterful doctor with great buffs. Anyway, we tracked and hunted and healed all morning long. I dont get a ton of time to spend on SWG...so my character never is all that great...not much of a grinder. But these guys made what little Ranger skills I had seem like they were the most important of the group. Really made me feel like, while I dont have a ton of firepower...I earned a place within the group. Best part of the deal...besides getting plenty of great XP....they tipped me 100,000 credits! God, I love being a Ranger!

Hmmm. I may have to give up some other things to head further up the Ranger tree. A fellow on Naritus is proposing a coop of hunters to harvest the best quality meat for docs and others with some people reporting stats and tracking the changes for all of us and some merchants having vendors for us to sell them to. I can post a link once we get this up and running to report how it goes.

Yes Cent, very profitable at times. I'm with the Ranger of Bria that Gorgoth is in. The next night I led a group of rangers, anda few other friends out. We collected 39k endor wooley and getting paid 30cpu. So in 2 nights, as a group and not the same one, we made over 2 mil credits. I really love bing a ranger. The tracking skill definately made us more desireable as well.
