Thread: State of the Profession Formatting

Alrighty then...

I am testing out a format change in the State of the Profession list.

Which does everyone like better? The way the Bugs list is set up, or the way the Gameplay list is set up?

  • The Bugs approach allows me to order the priority of individual elements more accurately.

  • While the Gameplay approach betters categorizes the issues, and allows players to find a particular issue quicker

Check out the change via the link in my signature...

Thanks for your input.

I personally prefer the "Gameplay" version. I prefer the improved readabilityover the ranking of each item.Perhaps you could use the Gameplay version, but put a rank number next to each issue instead of a bullet point? Just a suggestion, its great as it is too.

Keep up the great work, and happy hunting!

"but put a rank number next to each issue instead of a bullet point?"

Interesting...

That would require renumbering a lot of elements though when something gets shuffled up in rank.

  • Personally, I like the Gameplay approach as well, and that is why I have used that system in the previous lists.

However, it means that a lot of the uncategorized stuff gets stuffed together at the bottom of the list...

  • Perhaps, all I really need to do is make more subcategories? Any suggestions for new categories to handle the Misc. stuff at the bottom?

How about instead of a ranking system that sets an items priority when compared to other items on the list (which as you've stated would require renumbering when things change), just assign priority numbers to each item (maybe 1-10, 1 being super critical, 10 being minor annoyances). That way you don't have to renumber everything when things change, but we (and the devs) have an easy way of telling which items are hotter than others.

The only problem with this idea is how to decide how critical items are. It's very subjective.

I agree that the Gameplay section has the superior format. It's easier to find a listing under the "Traps" section than to find every listing beginning with "Traps," although the latter is not particularly difficult.

I see a logistical problem with ranking the issues. How many Rangers are going to agree that issue X is the 7th most important issue, rather than the 8th, or 6th, or 14th, or 3rd? We probably all think some items belong in the Top Issues that aren't there; trying to rank them will certainly rankle many of us (sorry).

Agreed... Very subjective indeed.

  • Eventually everything would probably end up being the same ranking, as there is some lobby of Rangers behind each item on the list which would push fora higher ranking on their items.

I like the idea of a 1-10 ranking system (1 is most important, 10 is least). This way, changes to the ranking only affect the item under consideration. As for deciding how high to rank something, just go with how many people complain about/beg for the idea or by how much it affects the profession. So trapping being very ineffective might be a lvl2 or lvl3 request whereas foraging often claiming the inventory is full might be a lvl 5 or lvl 6 bug. A lvl 1 request would be something like /maskscent breaking too often and causing agro from 100m away. I.E.a lvl 1 bug is something worthy of a hotfix (and should be quite rare). A lvl 10 request would be something like the ranger hunting weapon--something that some people would like implemented but not everyone agrees.

Well I am trying to stay with the format specified by Thunderheart.

Essentially, five categories: Exploits, Bugs, Gameplay, Balance, Wishlist.

  • And within those categories, the Top issues should be prominent (they are Yellow in my case).

He has not explicitly stated weneed to rank our items, except by separating them into the given categories...

For the moment, I think I will stay with the subcategory method I have used in the past, until the Powers that Be state otherwise.

Thanks for your input everyone.

Perhaps you could add a few more levels of color to show priority, ie white for low, then yellow, then orange, then red, or something to that effect?

That is a good idea.
