First off, area track is semi broken. We are waiting for it to be fixed so it will work as intended.

Having said that -

As you start, you will be able to track animals in a certain radius. NO WAYPOINTS. If the creatures have spawned and are in your circle of ability, you can "see" them. At first you get a general direction. Later, as you progress, you get better distances, better directions, and the ability to track people (NPCs) and then players. Max range now is 500m radius, or one circular kilometer. At Master I can see creatures, people and players, with a heading and a distance to them.

I stress no waypoints for a reason. If you can't read your compass rose, then you are gonna have a hard time using areatrack. Also, you can't program for certain creatures, what you see is what is there. If the creature has not spawned, you can't see it. Yes, many times I have done an /ar (shortcut command) and seen nothing, moved 50 meters and had a rancor sitting there. Also, it tends to be goofy in the mountains, sometimes it does not work in valleys too well. And you can't see into houses.

However, I use it a lot. I want avian on a planet, I use it to find fliers or fynocks or whatever. In PvP I use it to recon for the other side. I have been 480 meters away from them, and messed with the Imps in tells, letting them know how many people they had, by name, and then did the same for pets. Very valuable.

The more you play with it, the better you get and the more uses you find for it.

have fun

Well said but I just want to clarify the progression a bit (at least I want to try):

Novice Ranger: See what animals are in the tracking radius. No direction or distance (but you can drop a waypoint and just wander in a small circle to find the stuff).

Tracking 1: I think this gives you a general direction to your targets (i.e. N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW).

Tracking 2: This should give you NPC tracking in addition to creature tracking

Tracking 3: This should be distance to your target.
Tracking 4: This is player tracking.

Hope this is useful to you. If you want, I wrote a small guide to tracking a long way back (not sure how accurate it still is). You can have a look here.

Yeah as master ranger I can answer it and all.

With novice ranger you can track creatures at 250m radius. Once you train up to tracking I you get creature tracking with distance at 300m radius. At tracking II you get creature tracking with distance and direction at 350m radius. Tracking III gives you npc tracking with distance and direction for 400m radius. Tracking IV give you player tracking with distance and direction for a 450m radius, Master ranger just add another 50m to make 500m radius for tracking creature, npc and players.

As example not long ago was on corellia near kor vella at Player City close by to where our pa war enemy front door step of their pa hall. This what I effected did with the skill of tracking. Had group clan members with me and ever time they where with in 500m radius of a scan at master ranger we on their ass like an Alabama tick destroying em to shreds. But only bad part was I had scan right after the last scanned since the prey was always on the move on foot or on vechiles.

This what you also get with tracking line other the tracking. Since come in handy to what creature can do for special along with damage and all.

  • Novice Ranger: nothing

  • Tracking I: nothing

  • Tracking II: Special Attack 1

  • Tracking III: Special Attack 2

  • Tracking IV: Base To-Hit

  • Master Ranger: Damage

Well, the only real way to sneak up on people is if they are TEF. And that's not very nice. Any overt player will have no trouble seeing your red dot on the radar. But it will let you find them a lot faster (/who [imperial/rebel] followed by /areatrack for players). And Master Ranger gets +10 ranged and melee defense.

Rangering really doesn't have an application to PvP...sorry.

It does work well for tracking Faction players in town. Sometimes in big towns you need to know what area they're in and tracking lets you figure that out, given that you know the town. Sure, they can see your red dot coming, but you can at least find them before they find you. Stake out good grounds to hide behind, that sort of thing.

It has been very helpful to me in PVP even though I can't do much myself as a Master Pistoleer without a buff. Generally I've been able to keep track of the searchable people with a simple track and /who factionname. I'd say it works at least better than 50% of the time.

The only time I've been able to put ranger to use in PvP was as an advanced scout. I started off overt (so I could join in later with my rifle), slapped on the camo, and went spying. Areatrack allowed me to circumnavigate the patrols and slip into a position where I could observe their movement. When I was spotted, I would fall back toward a pack of aggros. If they wanted to get close enough to me, they'd have to deal with my new friends. It seemed to be enough of a deterrent for them.

Really, it's all in how you use the skills you have.
