Thread: Attn Mineras: New feature idea for rangers and their existing camps.

Along the lines of looking at different types of camps for rangers, I came up with this.

Establish a camp leader system message channel to simulate having comm stations in the ranger camps. As a simplified example, there are 3 rebel camps set up in an area. A camp creator named Larry would type, /campchat add Moe and then /campchat add Curly. Then, all three could send system messages to each other about important events such as "Curly says: The Imperials are on us! Need help now!" There would have to be other commands for deleting people off the list and who controls the list but the mechanics would operate like a predefined chat group except that it sends all the messages out as system messages.

Advantage: In the GCW, since rangers place the camps, rangers would have a definite role in coordinating multi-camp campaigns by communicating important messages coming from other camps on a single channel, ranger to ranger. There is no faction-wide channel but this could be the key to coordinating people on the battlefields and, even better, there's a "roleplaying" definition behind it.(comm station built into the ranger camps) Outside the GCW, the system chat group(simulated comm station) will allow a group of rangers to communicate over long distances to coordinate hunting parties if they know of some other rangers that have camps set up somewhere out there. The range on the communications would be planetwide.

What do you think?

you'll have to forgive my touch of sarcasm here, but do you really want to go and add more stuff to a chat server by ACME? okay, now that that is out of my system...

I understand your concept here - basically what you are talking about is having ranger camps link groups for system messages, sort of like a squad leader has the ability to send system messages to everyone in their group. I haven't seen a battlefield big enough to really justify multiple camps and inter-group communications, which is its own tangled web. While I don't see this as a ranger function so much as a squad leader function, I'll pass it along.

Isnt there a feature already that allows you to create chat channels? just make one of those. it would do the same thing.

Yes, it's a glorified chat channel. But, it has much more style than a simple "chat group". I don't rememberanyone in Star Warsforming a chat group during a battle. They used comlinks. I want a comlink. A military comlink actually.

If battlefields can't support multiple camps, then they aren't large enough to support a proper battle. It's a pity.

he's not talking about 'chat' messages that show up in spatial...he's talking about system messages that show up in the middle of the screen...like the messages for when you get xp, or your squad leader puts something up there.

The concept of "battle" in SWG isn't really defined by massive units and 100's of troops. It's more like a large firefight with maybe an armor piece or two.

Well Mineras since you want to be the correspondent to Rangers I have a mesage for you to take back to your leaders. Most people will not or do not want Ranger skills for many different reasons and here they are.

1. The only rewarding thing you get out of any of the Ranger skills is Bio-Science and being able to harvest more resources from the slain creature. Examining a creature gives you no more information on it than being a Master Scout. Creature-to-hit bonus, not much.

2. Field Base camp and High Tech camp look cool but really have no rewarding attributes to waste skill points on.

3. Trapping, well not rewarding at all

4. Wayfaring, the only advantage is moving faster while prone, mask scent and burst run no significant gain at all compared to Exploration 4.

I am a Ranger and grinded to get to where I'm at and while I do enjoy the extra resources while harvesting and the looks of the two higher up camps I don't see any real value for keeping Ranger profession at this point. Being a Master Ranger the only two pluses would be the +10 melee and range defense but are all those skill points worth it.........no they are not.
