Ranger Archive
Thread: Considering Ranger as Profession Advice welcomed
That's the gyst of it. Rangers are essentially explorers with the ability to /maskscent from aggro creatures and harvest organic resources from all creatures. We also have an extended line of camps and traps that are currently broken but scheduled for a fix.
Other reasons to play ranger include our widely acknowledged dead sexiness as well as the soon-to-be-implemented /cannonball skill, which we frequentlyemploy atpool parties. Did I already mention that rangers are dead sexy? Yes? Well,it's true. Especially bothan rangers.
I don't really know about saying rangers be able to go anywhere they want?
A ranger, in its current state, is nothing more than just a glorified master scout. If all you want, then I suggest wayfairing. It gives bonuses to camoflauge, which improves your chances of using /maskScent. In addition, wayfairing will increase your crawling speed. From what I understand, if you are crawling around, with maskscent, you will be harder to detect.
Get wayfairing 4, and you can crawl around with bonuses to /maskscent, and you have a better chance of not being discovered by animals. You are still fair game for NPCs. Right now, that is all you get.
Here is a run down of the other3 lines:
Frontiering: cooler looking camps, that supposedly repel aggressives (most of us think that doesn't work currently). takes forever (did i say forever), for-ev-er, to get survival xp.
Bioscience: increases your creature knowledge, so when you examine, you can find out more info about the mob, levels, etc. basically everything you can get off of a fan site bestiary database. if you hunt, you can harvest more resources, and you occosianly get ranged bonuses to attack animals.
Trapping: you get the famous /rescue skill (many of us have renamed /mindshot self 3, or /suicide), and 2 area affect traps, that until only recently have started to work. notice i say, started to work. before they had no affect, now they are only slightly bugged.
So again, will it allow you to explore more dangerous areas with less trips to the cloning center? yes. How much better than a master scout? that is debateable.

Hoo-rah! I like the way you think.
Why ranger? well all the info I have looked at it seems rangers can pretty much go anywhere they want. I'm running a journal where I'd like to hook up with, and chronicle, other peoples adventures in SWG not just my own chars, see link below.

Read that all ? *grin* ok
Am I right in thinking that this would be the best profession for me, allowing me to pretty much go into any danger zone and report without being ripped to shreds and dumped back at the cloning centre?
are there any other advantages to being a ranger that you can think of for an in game reporter?
I heard a rumor there may be a writing profession, is that just a rumor?

thanks for feedback on this, I'm not exp grinding so who knows maybe once I get to the stage where I can actually choose ranger then all the bugs will be ironed out and the new bits you mention added.
Another bonus to being a ranger is that since it is basically graduate school for scouts the skill trees follow the same pattern i.e. they use three different types of experience.
Notice the weapon master professions... they use two types of xp 1)weapon and 2) combat. The weapon xp is divided among three skill trees, meaning it will take ungodly amounts of time to reach the top. At least with ranger you are still using survival, trapping, and scout xp, which means you have two trees that advance at their own rate and only two that share xp points.
The pain-in-the-butt about being a ranger is that the two most popular professions in the game, Bounty Hunter and Creature Handler, both require scout as a basic profession. This means that any hunting party is bound to have at least one or two others vying for that same scout xp, which means taking turns harvesting and camping.
