This profession all started when one of my friends asked me to become a Ranger so that we may be able to track down animals better.... Well ever since I had first started playing this game and read what Rangers have for skills I was interest in playing this role to see what it would be like, but I never did due to the fact that my friends were telling me it was a waste of time. Now they have changed their minds and are asking me to become this profession to help them out. Funny how quickly minds can be changed huh... Anyway when I started the profession and got the frist tracking ability I was excited to see what kind of technique I was able to use to track animals. Well I was unhappy with the technique that Rangers are given to track animals down. The concept of tracking animals is a cool idea, but just giving me directions is not enough to make me want to continue playing this role. I believe that tracking animals, people and players should be a fun experience, and not just some little box that tells me the general direction in which the animals are.
So now I come to the part where I would like to talk about what other people think about my idea of changing the whole experience of tracking animals and people.
If I were given the chance to change the system I would leave in the box that tells us the general directions of the animal. After I have seen the list of animals in the the general area I would make a button at the bottom of the list that says "Follow Tracks". After you have selected the animal and have pushed the Follow Tracks button, I would like to seen some sort of animals tracks displayed on the ground or even just a guild line that shows the route of which the animals have traveled. This in my opinion would make the whole tracking experience more fun. As if you were really there and looking at the animal tracks and following them.
Again I would like to get some feed back from other players who are Rangers and see what they think for feel about my idea, and also if you have an idea as well I would really like to hear it.

Well ... we really don't want to loose the Player Tracking ability... so I can see how someone can track an animal from tracks... but I don't know how you'd track a player from tracks..

Ohh.. Nike's... well.. only Jim Bob wears Nike's... Follow those tracks!!!

SO if we put tracks for animals...then .. well.. you know... ehh.. no tracks.. nope.. we just know they're there.. and that's pretty much the jist of it..

THere is an idea bouncing around that I like a lot.. it's a ranger only creature.. a blood hound of sorts, that goes out and comes back with the information.. That would also work for players a bit better.

I agree with that also about he blood hound idea. I think that would be a great way to track animals down.

The player idea I agree with, that would be a hard thing to track, and also how they might set it up.

What I would like to see and this is with some of the other class is just something that would make the whole experience more fun instead of it just being a read along experience.

For creature tracking, Id like to see an actual /track that functions similar to the mission terminals, it would give you random list ofcreatures and distance based on the area your in, and spawn a lair or herd there, without a waypoint so it still take some player skill to find the creature lair or herd, /areatrack could be used when your in the area you think its in, to find which way its actually at.And, instead of money, an ammount of scouting XP dependant on the type of creature would be awarded upon finding and/or destroying the lair/herd. You should be able to spawn things anywhere from 500-2000m from where your at, and Master Rangers should be able to /track and spawn things too high for Mission Terminals, and even cooler would be unique creature that only Rangers can find to kill, so Rangers would be useful for group hunting.

/areatrack Also needs to be changed a bit, mainly the distance it works, should at least go upto 1000m range around Tracking 4 or Master Ranger or so.

Hey...I do not wear Nikes... well not all the time. Sometimes I wear real shoes, if TopSiders count.

Anyhow, IRL you can track people by their boot prints. If they have on distinctive boots and are not careful about leaving sign.

I don't disagree with the big post, just my usual rant against freaking waypoints. We see tracks going north, we get north, and we guesstimate how old the tracks are and the creatures speed and know about how far away they are.

I thin the range is ok. I round klick is a huge area.

Aye, seems like we might also smell the tracks, see if it smells like boot (is fresh) still. Perhaps if any wind has moved things into it to see if it's been there too long.

Many ways to track a human.

Just give me a Burger, a gun, and 4 days. You'll have your human.

The problem with this idea is mostly technical. I had the same idea back when I played UO and messed around with the tracking ability.

Firstly, the creature may not have actually crossed through that area. Given that most creatures are spawned around a central point, be it a lair or static spawn point, they don't wander much. Would you care for an ability which only allowed you to find a creature after you've walked through a bunch of them? The ability just actually scans within a certain radius, and brings back whatever is in that radius.

Secondly, the major problem is purely technical.. If they tried to do it your way, they'd have to institute some sort of trail tracking system into every trackable critter. That is a LOT of data to be keeping, as it wouldprobablyhave tobe a string of coordinatesupdated every so often.. That would add more load to the I/O system as it would be another thing tracked periodically, and would be murderous when in large groups of critters, NPCs or players. If you think trying to navigate through a major city is bad now, this would cause a notable increase.

It wouldn't, in fact, be difficult to do, from my limited viewpoint as a Computer User working my way up the Programming line, and hoping to eventually get to the Novice Programmer profession. But it would increase the load to levels which would not be worthwhile for the use it would be put to.
