Ranger Archive
Thread: You say you want a direction?
Funny, I don't feel like this kind of ranger. Sure wish I was, would be cool, eh? Notice the "to pilot" bit?
Taken from the X-Wing "Wraith Squadron" book -
"Tell me about these Rangers," Kell said.
She gave him a curious look. "Why?"
"Because I'd like to know."
"All right." She turned on her back and stared up at the featureless ceiling. "It's an old order, the Antarian Rangers. Founded centuries ago to aid Jedi Knights. A few of them, anyway; most of the Jedi tended to be pretty solitary. But some of them appreciated having loyal, reliable warriors to help them. Freedom's Sons were one such order, and the Rangers were another.
"To be a Ranger meant knowing how to move in any environment. To blend in with the forest or grassland, to sail, to swim, to dive, to pilot. To be masters of our surroundings. Were were good spies, good warriors, very adept at intrusion and escape.
"In the old days, there were communities of the Rangers on several worlds, including Toprawa. There was some inter-marrying between the Jedi and the Rangers, which may be where I inherited my own nearly useless talent with the Force. Gradually, there were fewer and fewer Rangers around. The Clone Wars killed off whole clans, and then most of the rest were purged with the Jedi. The rest went underground. My family stayed hidden for decades, and then before we could emerge, Toprawa was bombed into barbarism by the Empire. That's when the last of the Antarian Rangers on Toprawa died."
That's the gist of it, hope you all enjoy a bit of backstory like I do. I would post it on the Station forums but I cancelled a few months ago.
that is exactly what I want to be, a master of my environment and skilled in all forms of survival, combat and tactics. Great post
Yes, but in order for us to have such a role we would need some decent combatbonuses and maybe a camo that worked on pc's.
The visions of the Antarian Ranger and the Outdoorsman are completely different in my opinion, I think the best route to take and make everyone happy would be a combination of both ideals. As it stands the Outdoorsman would only be able to help a PvE jedi and not one dedicated to PvP.
Maybe the Outdoorsman could be given several weapon specific bonuses due to our greater knowledge of the environment as opposed to the combat/soldieroriented weapon professions as they are now. Maybe a bonus to hit while in wilderness areas and a defense bonus when in the same place against pvp'ers. Maybe we can get loot modifiers to our weapons, both melee and ranged, similar to powerups, but outdoors specific,or maybe made from harvested materials. Like using a special gland from a particular animal to increase the power of a rifle. It is just a thought. Or a slicer type ability to give a powerhammer a greater kick against rancors, but weaker against everything else. Something like mob specific weapons.
Hehe, and I still say they should make Squad Leaders the Ranger-esque Commando type and Rangers the Outdoorsman. Both templates need to take other skills anyone, and no single advanced line should be the be-all/end-all of a play experience. Otherwise, everyone becomes it ![]()
didn't want the be-all end-all, just the stealth/survivalist unit. Let squad leaders be the martial/group-martial unit. letSL buff themselves and groups and be the commando. Let us infiltrate and hide. They are Samuri, we are Ninja.
Perhaps they should be the ones that detect our camo, or nullify it (depending on how it finally gets implimented)

Nice info, Fred. I've been hoping for a while tosee an example right out of the Expanded Universe that mentions the Antarians.
I got it from Pyradius, he posted it to the AR forums on swgalaxies.net
