I'm fairly new to the Ranger community, but I do know a thing or two about programming. In light of Calc's recent "Offensive Ranger" thread, it would seem that the Devs are looking for suggestions on small, incremental improvements to the Ranger class. This, I think, would be preferrable to waiting eight months for a full revamp, which if the Smuggler revamp is any indication could turn into 16 months.
So, what small coding changes can be done to improve the Ranger, and be rolled into the Combat Balance patch?
Here are my suggestions:
1. Damage vs. Creatures increase, similar to Unarmed damage increase gained by TKA. With the CB accuracy changes coming I believe it would be wiser to just stick to good ol' reliable damage.
2. Melee and Ranged defense bonuses and Melee Toughness, so wearing armor isn't so necessary.
and...
3. Spread Creature Harvesting, Creature Knowledge, Damage vs. Creatures, Melee/Ranged defenses and Melee Toughness across the Tracking, Wayfaring and Frontiering lines similar to how Creature Handler is organized.
I welcome your agreement, refinements and rejections.
Cheers,
Gho

I agree with this approach (in fact, I am trying to get stuff done until we get to a revamp stage). I am all for a revamp, but I am sure we can get Ranger into pretty good shape via hotfixes (camps being the exception).

Its good to have a coders input, things that(most of us) think would be fairly easy to do, probably arn't.As long as we can justify these small improvements, all for it. Anything else been suggested Calc?

Lance Corporal Camray Onahe, Wanderhome Ranger/Swordsman/Creature Handler

Would an increase to or ability to harvest all three resources be an easy coding change? I would imagine it would be a simple change in a number or percentage.??????

Doing something like this can be done in the shortterm without much work from SOE. To fix all of the rest of our skills is a complete profession revamp. Which we know is many months away. So I think what some of us are asking for is a bone to hold us over before we get to eat the whole steak in the Ranger revamp.

Are there really that many people "cherrypicking" ranger skills where this is necessary? Or are you saying that the improvements to harvesting, knowledge, damage, and defense would be so considerable that it would need to be spread out to keep balance?
Both are/would hopefully be true. As it is, many people just take the tracking line of Ranger for the tracking and creature harvesting mods...what else is there? Hopefully, when we get an increased mod, it will be spread out to prevent dabblers form having almost all of the skill as a Master.

i agree with kachada.
the answer is to add to the other less sought after skills instead of breaking the others down.
its always nicer to see things added on than taken away.

I think everyone knows how I feel about this. I'm all for small changes, espcecially in the PvP and GCW areas. I do NOT want a rushed/borked publish and I don't want skill point reductions that negatively influence our community. I'm all for small changes. But the stuff you're talking about is COMBAT REBALANCE issues. I think those should be at the forefront of our requests, since they're already pushing that.
The stuff I can wait on is the /track command, modular camping, new traps, new camps, etc. The "fringe" benefits, as I see them. But we do need love...just not a quickie.

Me too mate, in order mine are:
/Track:
I have high hopes for this skill and so many ideas my head is bursting, i want to tell them all but also dont want to hijack this thread hehe so ill leave it simply, i want an advanced track feature ![]()
Modular Camps
Ranger Weapon
New Traps
Obviously the new offense/defense stuff would come first so i havnt included it ![]()

Simply yes. Most Rangers are 0/0/4/0. Or they may be 3/0/4/0. But tracking is our best tree and thats where most of the Ranger benefits are. I agree it needs to be spread out.

I agree tracking is your best tree, btu the solution isnt to spread what few skill you have among 4 trees just so master rangers can sneer down on dabblers.
I used to be a master commando. We only ever had one good tree, most commandos were only ever 0040 too. The solution isn't spreading the flamethrower mods out mong the 4 trees, the solution is fixing the rest of the damn trees.
I look at the ranger trees and feel the same way.

"The solution isn't spreading the flamethrower mods out among the 4 trees, the solution is fixing the rest of the damn trees."
I understand your point, but we're not going to get a full Ranger fix anytime soon.
The creature harvesting and knowledge bonuses should probably stay in the Tracking line. Any combat bonuses, however, should be spread out at least between the Tracking and Trapping lines since those are the two skill sets that are concerned with hunting and killing creatures, rather than camping and avoiding creatures.
Anyway, my main point was to push for small, incremental improvements to the Ranger, proposed in such a way that the developers can make such changes fairly easily and roll them into scheduled updates (like the combat rebalance). It's a goodway to getyour petprojects completedin a busy coding environment.
