Howdy folks,
Just want to thank everyone who contributed to my learning about this wonderful profession. I know I must be in the minority but I loved it!
However, due to my desire to explore more of the professions (specifically trying out every elite weapon prof to decide on a permanent one I want longterm) I've also untrained everything but Track line and Camping line. I love the track feature and camping xp was the most annoying to get. Trapping aint a big deal if you can solo big mobs with yer weapon.
so what's my tips to new rangers?
Master a weapon elite profession first. I went swordsman as several buddies recommended it as the best melee line. Had I known that once I masteredthis (and I hope this holds true for all of the elite weap profs) I could get a solo group on Dath, take enraged rancor mish's and get an outrageous amount of scouting xp and trapping xp permob I would have done it that way first. There's nothing quite like taking down 3 Enraged Rancs solo and simultaneously with area attack heehee.
Next mastering each line.
Camping - What worked for me was making 8 camps at a time, run a camp macro and an advertising macro inviting peeps to visit and heal wounds, and goto bed. Wake up the next morning to 8k+ survival xp. Oh yeah, and have fun making a camp and sitting to make your camps/traps on days you want to sit back watch the suns set and chat with yer buds or in between doc buffs heehee.
Trapping - Make em, and use em. Use them on Dant mission mobs like Huurtons and Thunes. Nice xp. I would make like 6 types of traps but them all on my shortcut bar and cycle through them 2x per mob, once at the begining and once half way to taking them down. Pick a day to trap, knowing your running missions to trap, not to gain combat xp or $$ from completing missions.
Tracking, Wayfairing - easiest xp in the proffession. Find a contractor to make your killing innocent lil' animows have a purpose. Gather that hide, bone, and meat! Oh yeah use the camokits as often as you can, I didn't find /conceal breaks that annoying or often and it's like getting xp for doing nothing as you run between mission terminals and your missions.
It's been 2 days since I dropped master and I already miss it. My impression is this is a support line unlike any of the elite weapon/combat/crafter lines. Similar to Squad Leader, you can't survive in SWG without another skill as your 'main prof'. Would I like to see changes? sure. Are we nerfed without them? I don't think so. I have some issues with the Outdoor Ranger proposal. I think some of the skills are tangent-ing (if that were a word) from interdependancy with other classes. But that's just me. Whatever changes are made will be an improvement to what I feel was already a great class.
Oh, and thank god for Contractors, I love going out into the wild for a day and logging off at night at my customer's vendor, knowing I've provided them with 5k-10k of the hide, bone or meat and getting paid 25-50cpu!! WWWEEEEEeeeee.
If any of you are on Valcyn and need a hand, send Silverwing an email. L8R!!
