Thread: The Origin of Ranger

The idea of what a Ranger is constantly comes up on this board. What exactly is our profession supposed to be?

Are we supposed to be like Star Wars' Antarian Rangers? Or like US Army Rangers? Or are we like Aragorn in Lord of the Rings?

Maybe we should go back to the past and see who the first Ranger was. I'm seriously interested in the origins of Ranger. Who was the first Ranger? How did the title and profession come to be?

I'm just curious... and will try to find something, but if you know. Please share.

Working on it

Ranger atm has no direction. Our only role is hunters because the other 3 tiers are useless aswel as most of scout. Kind of funny how many pigeon hole us as hunters when rangers dont even havea tier called hunting anymore.

We want to change this, problem is we have no idea if the devs are actually reading what we say and if our 18 months of work actually means a thing. I know im putting my all into getting us a great revamp that fixes the primary issues of ranger and if it still doesnt happen then im out after ive helped iron out the bugs.

Head to the tier names thread and post what you would like to see. I read it all the time and its a great way for me to gauge the opinions and desires of the community on an individual basis.

Well, Commandos would be the equivalent of Army Rangers, except the hair is longer and Commandos don't do Hooah correctly.

Antarian Rangers were a mix of all professions assembled to help the Jedi, so we don't fi tthere.

We are sorta like Aragorn, with the Bothans as hobbits (mean tempered evil lil hobbits they are tho).

I think of us more like Mountain Men. We are super hunters/trackers, fairly self reliant, and totally at home in the weeds.

Oh man. What a twisted and wild path that question has taken...

At first everyone signed up for ranger with thier own pre-concieved notions of what that word means. It is a powerful word that draws the human imagination in and sends it 100 different directions at once. The disscusionabout ranger used to be some of the best threads on the boards and man did they get involved.

Eventually the devs said... quit all that nonsense. You are the Masters of the Wild.

So tat's what we are/supposed to be. At least according to the Devs or the previous devs...

To us, what they think we are seems to matter little. We are rangers. Plain and simple. What does that mean? I think it means something different to every one of us. But at the end of the day I know that I can look square in the eye of my brothers and sisters on these boards and just know, we are Rangers.

It seems to me some days I am a mobile perpetual wound machine.

smacked around, camp, smack around, camp, smack around, camp....it's like a recursive macro someone else is using on me. Thankfully, Ilove camps.

i like the fact that we CAN take damage, unlike alot of combat professions, or other support professions. to me, we're as likely to fight and survive, or self heal, as combat medics. we can actually go out, hunt till we puke, suffer damage, sit in camp, pay NO ONE to heal us, buy no buffs, wear no armor, and still logout at the end of the day with fully healed HAM bars.

that is what it is to be self-sufficient. we dont fare all that well in PvP combat, but I think most Rangers would rather stay away from PvP, and that is why we dont need an uber fighting skill set (althout a "Ranger Shot" that automatically blinds an opponent would be cool, kind of a combat applicable maskscent that would delay your opponents' attacks for a few turns).

i love being a Ranger, and if asked what I think it means, I'm running with the Aragorn definition.

Well I was curious, and figured I should start with the basics. www.dictionary.com defines ranger as the following:

  1. A wanderer; a rover.

  2. A member of an armed troop employed in patrolling a specific region.

  3. Ranger A member of a group of U.S. soldiers specially trained for making raids either on foot, in ground vehicles, or by airlift.

    1. A warden employed to maintain and protect a natural area, such as a forest or park.

    2. Chiefly British. The keeper of a royal forest or park.

The way I play my new ranger on Chilastra (rifles/ranger, human) is by patrolling the area I live and keeping it free of aggressive threats so the local populace can travel in greater safety.

No. I "signed up" for Ranger knowing *exactly* what Rangers can and cannot do in this game. Which is why I do not support the "lets be more of an army ranger" ideas, that's not what I "signed up" to, I signed up to a profession making me more efficient at hunting creatures (while the extra efficiency is not really great it is still there ). And here you see the reason why I am out of the discussions about the proposed revamp, as long as I see a defined "key role" that goes in exactly the direction that I do NOT wish to be the future of Ranger I see no point in taking part.
