I have been trying to decide on a template Im happy with and Ive come across Ranger several times as a possible option. Ive tried several templates on test to see where I want to go. Ive tried MCH/M ranger....useing the remaining points in BH (up the carbine tree to carbine 3) I dont do bad. I can take lvl 79 missions and live. But creatures become a hassle, was thinking of trying a ranged profession....MBH is the obvious choice. Good dmg and very nice specials. Ive tried Rifles but had some trouble trying that (kept going to prone even though I didnt want to...and missions my lvl wiped the floor with me).
Ive notived alot of Rangers here dont even have creature handler. Just curious, if you could decribe a play session....how you play for fun. Just hunt resources to sell....track for other players? Im interested in Ranger...have been since before CU. Ill also be lvling Ranger the old way....exp from kill lol.
Good hunting out there.

Fwiw, my typical (pre CU) play session was to group with my friends. I used my tracking skills to aid in our hunt. I used Camo to keep the group hidden from mobs (for 4-5 seconds). I rarely used traps, but they are essential for the solo Ranger. I used the harvesting mod to collect resources for my guild Doc, who was usually grouped with me at the time.
While I did a lot of hunting for resources (never sold any....it was too much *ahem* work
), I actually did a lot more content-type activities. My friends and I becme masters of the Corvette (both inside and out), we cleared just about every cave there is (I think we cleared everything except the DWB). Most of what I did was not Ranger specific and, in fact, my Ranger skills probably hindered me, but my guild made up the difference.
So, honestly, unless you want the bigger harvests, Ranger is not the greatest profession there is. The tracking line is great, but it has arguably all of the current useful skills in the profession.

I used to have Creature Handler, however, with the new PreReq's if you want to Master Combat Profession you get a measly 4 skillpoints left over. Guess I do need to get some FS branches...
I tried out BH and it seemed to do a good amount of damage and has great defenses. I personally like Pistoleer (and I was a hardcore Pikeman for a while) the best. Crowd Control abilities are good just in case you get surrounded. Stopping Shot actually works well, and I was takin' down Tortons pretty quickly.
I'll track for a price. I even did a Hero of Tat and found the moisture farmer in under 2 hours. Luck was on my side.
Mostly, I'll hunt. And if I have my guildmates it goes a lot better. I thought grouping was fun before the CU... and I think it's a little better now too.
The best if putting up a HTFB and having newbs come and gasp in awe.

I personally like the concept/melieu of being a ranger. It's very attractive.....but the SP cost to benefit ratio is too high. Maybe if I could use traps on players or at least NPCs...or lower the SP cost.....I understand we should have to master scout....makes sense....but lower the cost of the Ranger boxes to balance that against the other professions that don't require every tree of a basic prof.....
