Thread: Shouldn't a Ranger (aka Master Scout + More) Be Able to Wear *Scout* Trooper Armor?

I love Ranger... even if the class gets no love, costs more to respec to, has near useless features and costs more skill points than any class in-game now.

I used to be a master Ranger on Bria, and a MCH before that, and now i decided to respec back to Master Ranger & MCH.

I want to be an outdoorsman, a great hunter, a man of nature.

But I'm also Imperial and I loooove the new scout trooper armor.

Only problem isI cannot wear it. Both Ranger and CH are scout-based professions, and yet give battle armor certification. I'll pick up Novice SL or BH, but these give me assault armor certification.

Am I the only one who thinks rangers should get scout trooper armor certification? It seems that masters of stealth in nature would normally pick the armor with the least encumbrance, so why the battle armor cert?

Has this been discussed before? Do you guys live having battle armor cert?

My two cents...

good question.

Scout armor probably provides the least amount of protection vs. kinetic, the kind of protection we need vs. critters. While it would make sense for us to have a light/ scout armor for recon, we really arent designed for recon or any para-military actions.

Also, the scout armor is truly only "scout" armor in name only.. and only applies to the imperial scout trooper armor.

For what rangers do, the battle/ assault armor makes more sense to me.

There was a long thread about this a month ago... somehow it got kind of nasty.

To sum up a few things brought up in those posts:

1 - what's in a name?

2 - battle armor is probably the best choice for us, as it offers equal protection against energy/kinetic.

3 - Imperial Scout armor is recon armor -- although it's sounds fitting for our profession, it means nothing for neutral or rebel rangers. I think most rangers and creatures would be pretty unhappy if the cert given to us was recon armor instead of battle, or even assault. Ie. high energy resists when we deal with mostly kinetic damage, and little energy (npcs or ranged creature attacks).

4 - As far as encumbrance, it doesn't matter what your professions armor cert is -- if you master, you'll be fully mitigated. If you dabble in a few professions with three different armor certs, without mastering, then you might have to weigh the pros/cons of movement/speed/accuracy penalties.
Master BH can move and shoot as freely in assault armor as a pistoleer can shoot in recon armor.

It's all semantics. The types of Scouting we do (hunting, pathfindind, etc.) are different than the types of Scotuing the Scout Troopers. They might have been more appropriately named Recon Troopers.

That being said, and others have pointed out, Scout armor falls under the Recon armor category. That armor is generally weak to kinetic damage, and strong vs. energy damage. Since we deal mostly with critters (critters which do kinetic damage), we don't really want to wear armor that is weak to damamge that we are taking. One thing to note, you can always pick up a combat profession that has the Recon armor cert, if you want to wear Scout armor .

Thanks for the replies so far. I guess that since I'm a roleplayer, I like to look the part, and I thought the scout trooper armor was the more fitting for rangers in terms of look.
ButI fully understand the kinetic damage issue, and the other factions as well.

As for picking up a prog that gives me recon armor, it's almost impossible for me as Master Ranger/MCH (I also have 8 points currently invested in FS trees as well). My leftover points are going in ranged support soI can pickup Novice SL (which will give me assault cert). The ranged support line and novice SL box will give me decent enough mods on all ranged weapons + some defenses, + i want to be able to lead groups with the system messages in SL.

I guess I'll wear my scout trooper armor on Naritus or Flurry then.

I might disagree that shiny, white armor seems Rangerish (but I know...the name gets you).

I do see your dilema. As I posted that 'you could always pick up a prof that gives you the cert,' I honestly thought to myself, "I hope his current combat prof doesn't give him a battle armor cert"

I dunno about your scout Trooper armor, but mine is like 5900+ Vs Kinetic...... Now, I just wish I could wear the frigging helmet.
