Since having test center, and since sony cant seem to keep their regular servers up ... I decided to test something that was nagging at me; is the cost of becoming master ranger worth it in pounds of meat... and what will be my opportunity cost by taking master ranger rather than masterch?
Well, after looking into it there are only 2 real areas that interest me; (note; all tests were done with trandoshan)
1. wayfaring; is the conceal worth it? Well, it IS a noticable improvement, but the fact is that coupled with rifleman I find myself not worrying that much if something breaks my /maskscent or conceal. I found conceal works better, I might even say alot, but I would be stretching it.
2. is the harvesting worth it? Well, to test this i did the same lair of malocks. At master ranger they gave up 69 meat, very nice indeed. But at ranger 0030 they gave up 62. Retaining nearly 90% of the ranger benefit. At ranger 4404 they gave up around 54 meat; 52 at scout 0040.And at scout 0000 they gave up a clean 40. So yeah, there is somebenefit to ranger, but the difference between master and 0030 was to me... quite possibly worth picking up ch master for "fun" purposes.
3. Traps, well we know this is a joke. I get all the best traps in scout.
4. survival- call me a boner or a loner ... whatever the reason i just dont see a benefit from a bigger tent.
So there we have it. Dabble ranger. The real nagging question is; would ch even be worth throwing in? Some sore melons in the ch forums claim that a non ch pet will have 10k ham and 60 resists... I personally went shopping to verify such a wild and dubious claim. I found there was a self made master bio engineer... and he had ONE non-ch pet on his vendor. The non-ch pet had about 5k ham, and about 50 resists, it had some sweet specials like strong poison, BUT it sold for a MILLION CREDITS! Now, considering with buffs it might gethalf as powerful as anon-buffed master ch pet ... itmight have somevaluebut a million creds would be quite alot to pay, especially when I consider i could have more than 1 pet as a master ch, and could go get my own, and could pick up really decent ch bio engineered pets for around 50k.
But this does bring up an interesting point; a doc/rifleman in THEORY could have a fairly wicked little pet, coupled with a well equipped robot to help, they might be of assistance in taking down things. The really funny thing is that both of them combined would likely take nothing out that i couldnt take out with rifleman BEFORE even being SEEN! And if its so big that I cant take it out with a rifle before being seen, I probably have no business trying to solo it.... or I am using the wrong weapon, or i used the wrong special.
I guess the end all of pve combat however, would be the mch/mrifle, with 0030 ranger for harvest. He would need a doc to back up his pets in combat when going for something REALLY BIG, but then, you need a group to do that anyhow.

You forget /concealshot. Nothing is too big to take down (assuming you have a long attention spam). But yeah, most people consider Master Ranger a waste of skill points for a good reason.

I've been wanting to do this for sometime. Sit down in TC and just start crunching numbers.
It's hard to tell what our Mods really account for and how they end up actually applying.
Good work on the Harvesting thing. I think I'm gonna head to TC tomorrow and do some actual testing myself.

Nice work. Alas, this is an issue we have know about for a long time
. We do hope to get it rectified though.

So there we have it. Dabble ranger.
As there is *nothing* to dabble in that might help me to kill things faster at the current state of the game (speculations about post-combat revamp situations is due to a lack of details pointless) I disagree here.
Unless you can come up with the ultimate template that I overlooked that helps me to kill things faster (right now, I'm a speedcapped master swordsman, have no need for more than novice medic for creature hunting, in fact if I actually feel the need for a heal it's on the vette or in the dwb and then a cm or two is part of the group anyway) I see no reason to dabble, at least not from a 'more harvest / time' point of view.
And yes, I know we are underpowered when comparing effect to used skillpoints, however 'dabble' needs something making sense to dabble in, and I fail to see this in the game right now

This is great, i've been wondering how much units i'd drop once i drop to ranger xx3x. Not a lot it seems.. dropped all but the tracking line the other day (
) and i'm now working on ch and having lots of fun.
Miss being a ranger though.. some guy asked me to pop up a HTFB yesterday because i still had the Master Ranger title up.
