Hi, well I just started a new toon on Starsider and was going to make it a BH and use the rest of the points somewhere which I haven't figured out yet but now I'm thinking I might just go a totally different route and do something with scout/ranger skills but I'm not sure what I would like better for the combat profession to go with it. Right now my main toon is a TKM and I've pretty much enjoyed the up close combat. I've always thought rifles would be interesting especially because of the damage they can deal out but at one time my main toon actually had master marksman and the rifle tree was the worst for me because I'd shoot something and all of it's friends along with what I shot would come running over and make my range bonus worthless. Anyway, any advice or opinions are welcome. If you template gurus can come up with something that would let me play with BH stuff and still have some scout/ranger fun that would be cool too, I mean from what I understand you really only need the Investigation tree from BH to actually do BH stuff the rest is how quickly your combat skills can kill the mark.

Pistols.
And drop the BH crap, it's mainly useless for creature hunting.
silly question anyhow

Yeah I think I'll drop the BH idea yet again. It always sounds fun until I think about what I'd be dealing with in the end lol. So I guess I'm down to picking a combat proff. to go with what I'm gonna do. You mentioned pistols which is interesting only because I hadn't thought about that. The Scout FAQ the guy says he thinks rifles is best for ranged or swords for melee. Anyway, other than the combat proff which I have to decide on here's what I think I will go after.....Ranger 4/4/4/0, Medic 0/0/1/0, novice entertainer for mind healing or maybe skip it and dump remaining SP's into medic. Since I'm doing pistols again on my main toon, if I go ranged it would be nice to try something different though since I've never gone above master marksman with carbs or rifles. Hey I know I'll go carbineer and mow em down with full auto lol, ok that was a joke, you can laugh now...........

my char right now is doing ranger/rifles. I was doing swords, but they just werent me. Its much harded doing rifles, but it has the most benefits, (to-hit ranged bonus given with tracking). Not to mention the ability to track, camoflauge, and use conceal shot means you can bag that trophy animal of a lifetime, say the rare deranged toxic putrid mottled bile covered ancient dwarf giant diseased carnivorous nuna

I'm currently a ranger / fencer. Odd combination, but I originally did it because armor for wookies was pretty poor, and I found that not being hit much as a fencer was kinda cool. And yeah, being hit when a fencer, by a critter is rare especially if blinded. My suggestion is to try out different things and see how you like it. I'm tempted to go rifles eventually, again. Would be fun.

Ok thanks for the tips, looks like I'm gonna try rifles first, hope I decide before I buy too much goodies lol, glad I didn't run around the other day and buy a bunch of pistols yet.

The trick is to find the one that you feel most at ease with.
There are supporters of each of the combat types within the ranger family. I say 'supporters' but zealous fanatics might be closer in some instances. Each will advocate their own particular style as 'the one true way' but, like the fortune cookiee jedi temple meditation thingus tells you "be true to your self".
Having said that, rifles rock, but pistols pwn.
Hope that's made it clearer to everyone.
Good grief, I NEED my coffee this morning...

rifles are fine and all but if you want to solo almost everything in the game your bestbet would be 2 handed. I hunt GDK solo and have no problem with em. just remember to bring some pixie =)

Ranger Templates - pros and cons.
It all comes down to personal preference. Whatever you have the most fun with is the "best" choice.

I would also suggest you look through past threads. This topic/debate hs come up SEVERAL times, with good views presented each time.
IMHO,
Rifles have more variety and are better for the RP aspect of Ranger.
Swordsman is better at a funtional level... if you wan't to go in there and drop a lair of enraged bull rancors withough batting an eye, then this is your prof. Not as much variety in moves (I only use area, mind, and 2hd hit) but blast damage is sweet!
I'm a swordsman because I like to get in there and kick some creature a$$. But as has been said, it's up to personal preference and play style. You seem like you've played around with different combat profs so you should have an idea of which type you like. Also, it's fun to run up and down different combat trees, so experiment!

From a Role-Playing standpoint, I would say Rifleman or Carbineer would be best suited for a professional outdoorsman/hunter.
Personally, I like close in-your-face combat. I have been a TKM/Ranger for quite sometime. I've actually started getting kind of bored with SWG, so I decided to change my template around, to give me something new to do. So I am in the middle of dropping TKM and picking up Pikeman. I really LOVE pikeman so far. Just seems a lot of fun.
If you do go the route of rifleman, just remember that you have things like Take Cover and Conceal Shot as a Rifleman, and when using these, you can kill things before the enemy even knows what is shooting it. I wanted a Master Rifleman friend of mine kill 3 Nightsister Spellweavers with conceal shot, and they never aggroed at all because they couldn't find him.

Forgot one thing.
Above all else, do what makes you happy. This is a game, and we're all here to have fun. Don't pick up a profession because someone says it is uber or whatever, pick the profession up because it's fun.
If i wanted to be the most efficient killer, i'd be a swordsman or a rifleman, but personally, I like TKM and Pikes better, so I'm sticking with them.
Some people prefer Pistols over Rifles, or Carbines, it's all personal preference.
When you master any of the elite combat professions you'll be very good at PVE, so just do what you think will be fun.

I thought Spellweavers and other high level NS had 100% resists to all rifle damages? (they're vulnerable to kinetic and blast though, which is why swordsman is the best bet for NS hunting)
/concealshot does work great on other NPCs though.. even without using that special, the rifle conceal mod total at master allows you to usually kill them before they ever aggro or get close to you. It goes great with MS/camo
