Thread: How about a Master Ranger-only Outpost Structure?
- Can be placed on ANY planet (even the inhospitable ones like Yavin and Endor)
- It does not disband, unlike a camp
- It has a set maintenance like other structures
- It has terrain placement restrictions, like other structures
- It cannot be placed in a Player City (or any NPC city, of course)
- Has a regular mission terminal
- Has an explorer mission terminal
- As it is a personal structure, you can heal wounds and BF
- Itcan be registered with the map
- Maximum Storage of 75
- Uses up4 lots
- Can only be placed by a Master Ranger
The storage and lot usage can of course be tweaked, but I think the low storage and high lot usage balances it out with the fact that it can be placed on any planet, and the fact that it has two terminals built in. The idea would be that it could provide a FABULOUSbase of operationsfor the Ranger (and other players) to hunt from. The Master Ranger should have the skills necessary to maintain an outpost even in the harshest climates, and it would provide a definite alternative away from the crowded starports.
The costs would have to be relatively high, and since the devs like to push interdependency, I could see theschematic being something like this:
- 1 High-Tech Field Base
- 1000 Units Dantooine Wooly Hide
- 1000 Units Dathomirian Animal Bones
- 250 Units Yavinian Scaley Hide
- 250 Units Endorian Avian Bones
- 1 Wall Module
- 1 Light Power Core Unit
Anyways, just throwing out some ideas.

"overrun with hunting camps or outposts."That seems to be the concern of all rangers who are opposed to the idea, and indeed the major reservation of those who, like myself, are thrilled about the idea. The thing is... there aren't that many Master Rangers. If we counted them all up, there's like maybe a dozen on each server, right? (I actually have no idea... but I'd guess there isn't terribly too many.. in fact I could be too generous with my estimate). Given the stipulation that each Master Ranger could only have ONE hunting lodge, and there are three "inhospitable" planets, (hopefully there'll be more some day), that's only like four hunting lodges... on the whole planet. And that's assuming that every Master Ranger will choose to have a hunting lodge. Planets are big places, and if they have an unobtrusive design, it won't make any difference at all.
More Jedi than Rangers...hmmm.....I believe it. Did the Empire hunt rangers into extinction instead of the Jedi (on SWG)???
The only problem I see of Rangers having a structure, even one that disbands when you leave the planet or log, or whatever, is the hordes of people who will want that ability for themselves WITHOUT getting the Ranger profession.
You know, I've totally dissed the Hunting Lodge idea in the past, but I'm warming up to this version of it. Maybe it's the name. Outpost just sounds much better to me.
My problems with this:
- Rangers aren't architects. However, if you made it look like more of a Yurt than a log cabin, I don't think it would be much of a stretch. I'd have it require a little less hides, more metal and polymer, and more items that architects make.
- I don't want to see these all over the countryside. Requiring 4 lots might aleviate this, but I would much rather they only take 1 or 2 lots and just have a 1-outpost restriction for each Ranger. It would even be a good idea to limit the number of outposts on any one planet at a time, much like cities. For instance, Tatooine might allow 40 outposts, but Yavin IV might only allow 15.
Some ideas to add:
- Rather than requiring hides from multiple specific planets, the type of outpost you make is determined by the types of hides you use. If you want to make an outpost for use on Tatooine, you use Tatooine hides, and it has a specific look (perhaps only a color change).
- Each Ranger can only place 1 outpost, it requires 1 or 2 lots instead of 4.
- It should have a storage basin in the floor, or some way to store items without using backpacks.
Yurts:
http://www.yurts.com/ -I especially like the skylight on these
http://www.nestingbird.com/ -Notice how the base is supported with beams instead of a huge, solid foundation like on current buildings? That would be a nice touch.
http://www.yurtpeople.com/yurtpeople/gallery.html -Some great interior shots of larger yurt-like buildings.
http://www.advancecanvas.com/yurts/index.htm -Some goodstuff here, notice the prices. 5 grand for a yurt. Compared to a small house that's cheap. Even compared to a mobile home, that's cheap. So if you can sell a small house for around 7K credits, yurts aught to have a resale value of around 3-4K.
http://www.yurts.com/gallery/photo-gallery.aspx -Really attractive yurts on this page. Notice how they're open on the inside? I often wonder why the round Naboo house isn't. I hate that central hallway in those houses.
NRaas, steal some ideas from this thread, for use in the 'cabin.
Outpost would be confusing to most players. The first level of a Player City is called an Outpost.
Yup, I agree. I'm still not too jazzed about "hunting lodge" or cabin, whatever. But at least that name isn't confusing, so my opinion of the name isn't such a big deal.
OK...the only ISSUE I can see (is what I should have said). Remember how rangers reacted when the BH asked for camps/traps/tracking? I personally don't see the need to have a house (lets face it, by the list of requirements given in the original post, it IS a house) that is Ranger only. I am all for camps that don't disband and a stash, but a house on Dathomir is not necessary. As for wanting the skills that other professions have...I don't want any of them. I will earn the skill myself if I want it. And yes, every profession should have a unigue skill at Master level, I just don't think ours should be a house on a no-build planet.

I thought that was the point! Tell me you don't want to be able to pull out a kimogilla in battle, or you don't want to make your own Vasarian Brandy. Every profession's Master level should result in an ability that others would want to have.
