As everyone else said, I learned a long time ago that taking contracts is a sure way to burn out and not want to play the game. Now I accept offers for sale of items, if I have time and the inclination I'll go out and make a 100K creditson meat or hides. That's pretty rare though.

Abbaddon's original question was: "Why are good harvesters so hard to find"

I've read, with interest, the other replies and, because I'm a bit odd, have actually been thinking about this issue quite a bit.

One possibility is that the "good harvesters" aren't that hard to find but have instead already been found and are merrily harvesting away for their clients. They are fulfilling their contracts, earning credits and keeping busy. Hence they aren't hanging about the cantina, planet chat or wherever, actively hawking for trade.

Another is that "good harvesters" ARE hard to find because it is frequently a dull, repetitive job and people are ingame to have fun. There is also the possibility that harvesting isn't the main motivation in their characters development at this time, for example, at the moment I'm working towards Master Rifles. I've got to the stage where I get very low weapon XP from an awful lot of targets and, as I need 100's of 1000's of XP the idea of going hunting nuna's or ikopi is just laughable. (I get my highest XP/time return from NPC's at the moment but I've never managed to harvest much in the way of harvestable resources off them :smileywink )

"I constatly see large numbers of players complaining about having so little money"

This is an interesting statement too. I've not been in the game since pre-Launch like some have, but even I can remember when we could be in awe of an elite combat player who'd managed to get a 6 figure bank balance.

Players expectations are greatly elevated now. You will now find NEW players bemoaning the fact that after a few hours play they can't afford compo, an uber weapon custom made by a 12pt WS and 'only' have a million in the bank.

The more credits go into the economy the more people seem to want. Sadly, ooften for the same or less work!

Another possibility is that, like the "good harvesters", the players with pots of cash are kept busy earning that cash and don't have time / need to whinge about being broke. Others might find it vulgar to discuss their finances, either from fear of getting pestered by the workshy or from fear of being ridiculed for only having "enough" to be comfortable.

"if ever a scout had the motivation to actually seek out contracts...would make millions"

Motivation is a funny thing, isn't it? Me, I'm not motivated by money. It's just a number. I have enough to keep me in brandy, spice and twi'lek dancers for the next few months. What would motivate me to seek out a hunting contract?

I'm not motivated by a 'work ethic' either, at least not ingame. Heck, am here to have fun, socialise, explore. I work at work, why would I want to work harder at play?

Whenever I drop a prey I harvest from it. I'll take the resource that's best quality. As a result I sometimes end up with a stack of good stuff, if there's somebody buying, cool. If not, the local doc and artisans will be happy to get a pile of raw materials to use. In return I get buffs, furniture, clothes, favours...

On occaision, when the pot is getting low, I will go to C-net, check the auction channel, look for whose buying what and go hit the plains for an hour or three. That's close enough to work for me

"I harvested 500k of the last shift of Dathomirian Carnivore meat on my server in one day"

Impressive. Even considering that the creatures on Dath tend to drop resources in big chunks. 500k of Tat Avian on the other hand, now THAT would be godlike!

Not having a dig, just making the point that it's all relative. There was a great shift of Corellian Avian recently. I harvested a few 100k's worth and that was enough for me. One of my guild harvested half as much and was twice as delighted. /shrug
