Thread: Making TN more balanced

Just a quick post (this is my lunch break, I only got 24 minutes to write this and then eat).

The thing is that right now, for a very limited number of boxes in scout, anyone can run almost as fast as a Master Ranger. To me, that's just nonsense. So I've been trying to figure out a way to allow people to have some TN, but to provide incentives for both Master Rangers and Master Scouts. To this end, I've kind of come up with an idea that might allow us to take back some TN and make Ranger special.

To whit:

Split the TN modifiers up. Basically make there be two numbers-- Terrain Negotiation and Crawl Speed. Now give +10 to each at both the 2nd and 4th box of Exploration in scout and ranger, and give +5 to each at master ranger and master scout. This would give a master scout +25 to each and master ranger +50 to each, meaning that the fastest people up a hill will be Master Rangers (the way it should be). This also helps other profession. For example, if Riflemen want to take advantage of TN, they have to go all the way to Ranger. In my system, both melee and Ranged fighters who crawl will benefit by taking a few boxes of scout. But nobody will be as good as a Master Ranger.

so...whatch'all think??

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

Makes sense to me.

I am all for giving the Masters of any profession a few benefits that would make attaining master special. Why should "a mere Master Scout" be able to run as fast as I can, when I have spent a lot more skill points? And I don't crawl as a general rule.

I also think 24 minutes for a lunch break is too long.

JB

oh yeah, and it's "to wit" no "h". You got too much blood in your alcohol level.

sounds like a reasonable idea to me. I'm sure some career master scouts might not be into it but you never know.

While you don't crawl, many riflemen do. This way, they don't have to wait until Ranger to get bonuses to their crawl speed. Plus Ranger will be the only profession bounding up hills endlessly. and yeah, 24 minutes is a HUGE amount of time for a lunch break.

I like this idea. I found it always a bit strange that a Master Ranger was just as fast as a Master Scout. Crawling faster is nice especially for a RM, but it isnt worth mastering Ranger just for a higher crawl speed. Splitting TN into two modifiers would give another reason to master ranger.

yeah, maybe give more of a bonus (+75?) for the Master Rangers. After all, if we don't get the whole pathfinder idea, then we need more TN. And racing Jedi who are using forcerun3 up hills is fun.

a +75 modifier wouldn't speed us up any...at +50 you run at full speed up a hill already. I

Would this mean the current ability of a Scout to run up a hill would become less? Thats really the only problem I can see - it wouldn't go over well to weaken Scout just to make Ranger seem more useful. Other professions who took the Exploration line specifically for the Terrain Negotiation, or who have to take Exploration as a pre-req, but do no have the points for Ranger (such as SL and BH) will feel they have been nerfed. Most people could care less about the crawling.

I'd rather see Rangers get a bonus that doesn't weaken anyone else - like vastly incresed burst run timer or something. If I'm misunderstanding the post then just /whap me.

No, you're understanding correctly. I don't like nerfing professions to make one seem more powerful, but this has long been a point of consternation for me. Ranger is supposed to be the "elite" wilderness profession, but in the TN front, we get the short end of the stick. The people who have to take Exploration will still have a significant amount of Terrain negotiation-- both crawling and running. They just won't be as fast as a Master Ranger. I'm sorry, but I really don't think someone who takes Exploration IV should be as fast as a master Ranger when running up hills. It just makes no sense to me.

The only other way I can think to make Ranger TN worthwhile is have it improve total movement speed, meaning a Master Ranger would be faster than anyone else on flat ground, but I worry that people will complain about kiting. Therefore, simply making Master Ranger the only profession with +50 to TN.

Know enough PvP'ing Master Rangers for people to complain aboutif we were to get a speed increase? I sure don't. I'd enjoy being able to move a little faster, and I doubt most players would even notice. Be a nice perk to hunting, though, and I know I'm not the only one here who treks all over planets on foot. I would assume that the majority of us do that.

Yep, especially in Dath.....

This topic is a difficult one.... I am very split regarding balancing something that I feel is fair. I better not get involved

Ps, Lets not forget that we are Master Scouts..... It's very easy to forget that.

0-50 is for running

all over 50 is crawling speed....

Just for the ones who weren'tfamiliar with it.... The reason I know this is because I added a 10+ TN CA to my combat alt so she could reach 50 without mastering Scout nor reaching Exploration IV.

I know that lol. I was talking about if we split the TN modifier into two groups--crawling and runningspeed. That way, a Ranger would be the only one with +50 to running TN andcrawling TN. Master Scouts would have +25 toeach, meaning they'd run up hills slower thanthey do now, but still twice as fast as someone with no TN.
