After much work and some trepidation I finally joined to ranks of Master Ranger. There was a short ceremony at the base near the place I call home, then it was back to work. To be honest, I was glad to be back in the wilderness, especially after they demanded that I give a short speech during the celebration. I hate speeches.
Shortly thereafter, I fulfilled the hunting contract I had accepted and delivered a tremendous amount of hides to a local armorsmith; she even paid me what they were worth. My rifle skills were improving at a good pace, too, so all was well in my world.
At some point I decided to requisition a fellow Rebellion operative to assist in my duties as a member of the militia for the town on Dantooine where I sometimes reside. Those duties include patroling for Imperial aggression and dangerous animals in the area around the town. To my great satisfaction, I was told that a Senior SpecForces Pathfinder accepted the opportunity.
However, she was not at all what I had expected when we met. A Twi'lek female, after all, does not exactly fit the stereotype, no matter how much camouflage she dresses in. She came highly recommended by her peers, though, so I grudgingly welcomed her to the team and accepted our first mission together.
Our first mission was to destroy an Imperial reconaissance post that had been spotted not far from the base by one of our field agents. The Empire was getting down to business if they were setting up camps not 1000m from an Alliance outpost!
At the camp were a Squad Leader, two Snipers, a Rifleman, a Medic, and a standard Stormtrooper. When we arrived in the AO, the SL was conducting an OpOrder. The two snipers then broke out to patrol the area, and the rifleman and stormtrooper moved to a guard position in front of the outpost, leaving the SL and medic at the outpost. Six to two. I like those odds.
Since the two snipers had moved off in different directions, I decided that these would be our first targets. We circled back and around to the west of the camp to catch one of them as far out as possible. About 75m from him I went prone and we moved into position 64m from the target. Steadying my T-21 I took aim, sighted center mass on the target, and squeezed the trigger to land a shot in his torso. He appeared to have no idea from where shot originated, so I repeated as he scanned the area.
Then, shots began landing around me from the opposite direction! The other sniper had moved in and spotted me. His companion was still unaware, but this new threat would have to be eliminated before I could finish the job, hopefully without alerting my target or any of their allies.
Suddenly, the sniper began taking damage and I smiled. Eho (the Pathfinder) had taken up a guard position not far from me and had attacked the sniper when he spotted me. She dealt him a beating and kept him busy so I could put a couple shots through his helmet.
"Good job," I told her afterwards. She accepted the compliment with a nod and a smile. Quiet type. I like that.
I returned my attention to the other sniper, who was still nursing his wounds, and finished the job. Then we moved back toward the outpost for the two guards. They went down quickly and without sounding an alarm. This was looking good.
Full of confidence in my new companion's abilities, I began to pummel the Stormtrooper Squad Leader from 64m while signaling Eho to assault the camp. She kept them busy long enough for me to deal killing shots to the two of them. It was a tough fight, but we both came through largely unscathed and with a newfound trust in each others' abilities. We quickly proceeded to search the camp for useful items and information, then set about to destroy all the equipment we could not carry out. I'd call that a successful test.
The next few days saw similar success in many different missions. Eho was critically wounded in one firefight and had to see a physician afterwards, but the wounds healed well and there is hardly even a scar. She proved her competency and dedication several times over the next few days, helping to save my skin more than once. She is definitely cut from good material. I notified the base commander that I'd like to see her put in for a commendation. Let her give a speech, I thought with a grin.
