Well, after reading KaiRaene's thread about his Europe trip (congrats by the way) I figured i'd ask a similar question.

In late august/early September my girlfriend and myself are going up to Toronto for a week. It's going to be our first vacation together, and my first vacation in a long time.

So, i need some ideas of some good places to go to up there.

We will be on a somewhat slim budget, so we can't go see some of the more expensive stuff there, but anytime fun/exciting/interesting you guys can think of would be great.

I know we are probably going to go to The Toronto Fine Art Museum, but other than that, don't have any definite destinations yet.

We'll be staying in a hotel in downtown Toronto, and will most likely be walking to most things we'd do.

They used to have a theater that only put on The Phantom of the Opera. Took my wife a few years back and she still raves about the experience. Other than that, eat and drink?

This thread was a suprise! I grew up near Toronto and have lived my whole life in Ontario.

First, you'll want to avoid going up the CN tower or going to the Sky Dome - both are interesting to see but NOT worth the money to get inside - especially if you're on a tight budget. $20 for a view from the top of the CN tower, you decide. One of the best parts of Toronto is just hanging out on some of the streets a neighbourhoods - Queen st. is lots of fun with unique and interesting things to do, Yorkville is nice and ritzy with Ferrari dealerships etc. The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is a fun place to spend some time. Toronto Island can also be a fun day and the Ex is also a blast. The Ex is a big permanent fair that is also attached to Ontario Place - both worth checking out if it's nice weather out. Hmmm, I'll see if I can think of more stuff for ya.

I know Toronto is really trying to push tourism these days so you should keep an eye out for some good package deals. My fiancee went down there with a friend last year and for something dirt cheap ($80 or so, can't remember) they got a hotel room (at a nice hotel), theatre tickets and dinner. Ever since the SARS scare a few years ago, there have been fantastic deals out there.

Writting this, I realize that growing up near Toronto, I never did lots of the touristy stuff. We go there all the time, but it's usually to visit friends and family. I'm sure you can find some great tourist handbooks though.

Thank Cryos.

I was reading about the Ex fair thing in a travel book, and i think that's going to be one of our stops. we're going to be up in Toronto for about a week.

a friend suggested going to see a blue jays game, but i don't like baseball, i'd much rather catch a hockey game anyday.

this will be my second time out of the US. last time was just a few hours on the Canadian side of Niagara falls.

cyros please don't laugh when I ask this:

We are planning on driving up to Toronto. The hotel we are looking at is in a fairly central location in downtown Toronto according the maps i've seen. We'd like to walk to most of the places we go in the downtown area, so here's the question:

Is it safe to walk around the streets of Toronto during the day, and possibly late at night? I honestly have no idea what the crime situation in Toronto is, so i just really don't know if it's safe to walk the streets at night without my Trandoshan Supressor pistol and my Scout Trooper armor.

Well, I'm sorry, but it's hard not to laugh - yes it's safe. During the day you won't have a problem and at night it's safe too - just stay away from really sketchy looking clubs down at the end of long dark ally-ways. I've been out at night in Toronto since I was a kid and never had any problems - you will see homeless people etc, but nothing you should be worried about. To the east of Toronto is a town called Scarborough - it's now officially part of Toronto - that's, IMO, a pretty sketchy area that you should avoid - although you'll have no reason to go there other then less than legal activities. Toronto is pretty busy at night and any central area/main street is perfectly safe to walk around without fear.

Also, Blue Jays are a baseball team whereas the Raptors are the Basketball team. The Maple Leafs are the hockey team but... well, you know about the hockey issue. Although I haven't been to a baseball game since the strike in the early '90s, the sky-dome (where they play) is a truly impressive building. It's a world class stadium with a retractable roof - I said don't go there because I would find it boring and you can see the sky-dome from outside just fine - it's adjascent to the CN Tower.

Hotels downtown - they should all be good if they seem to be in a central location. You can walk lots of places but the subway is also a great way to get around. The subway is certainly not as clean or as efficient as some of the ones I've been on and heard about in Europe, but it does the job. Cheap, easy, and get's ya where you need to be. Also, unlike most European subways, the Toronto system is VERY simple (2 lines) so it's hard to get lost and confused - also, if you do get lost, I will never refer to you as a Ranger again.

Oh, I forget to say: driving in Toronto sucks. No matter what time of day you go there is always friggen traffic and the drivers are rude! The 401 (the main highway into Toronto) is also the busiest high-way per-capita in North America. Needless to say, it's a great idea that you're not planning on driving in the city - walk, subway, or taxi - don't drive in-town.

Most people pronounce "Toronto" as "Tor-on-T-oh" but locals don't really pronounce that last T - saying "Tor-on-oh" will help you fee like more of a local

True, but from what I hear, that only applies to rangers who's name starts with "C" and ends with an "aclculus Entropy"

I spent about 6 weeks in Toronto (at the U of) a few years ago and the city seemed very safe to me. It has an *excellent* transit system, so if you can't walk anywhere you can always take that. I myself would just walk everywhere and never really felt unsafe. For example, it was about a 30 minute walk from the U to the shore of the lake through some really cool places (like the Chinese market). Of course, I wasn't out that late, but a few times I was out after dark....

I was really impressed with the sheer variety of good restaraunts to choose from - definitely a nice city.

One other interesting thing is that fild companies like to film in toronto because it looks so much like a us city but doesn't cost as much (this may have changed - don't know). So, you'll be walking down the street and see a US mailbox sitting there and then you see the film crews.
