Thread: Another foray into simple changes for Ranger that could go a long way

THis time, I think you will find the notions presented less contentious.


But keep in mind that working as a S/W developer in R/L and working as a S/W architect I subscribe to the idea of finding nice things for our profession that dont require huge amonts of work for SOE. in S/W solutions that give the most return for the least amount of effort are the ones most likely to be approved and gain funding. Projects that are complicated and have too many addons face the budgetary axe. SImple fact of the business world. Gotta go by the K.I.S.S methoid (Keep It Simple, Stupid)


Our laundry lists of things we want to see done is very nice and full of good ideas, but if that list doesnt get condensed into the things we need/want the most, then the whole list will get ignored.

My biggest problem with Ranger as it stands is that to me, it is nothing more than a high end scout, limiting the Ranger to being a outdoorsman, creature centric type person, and really limits all the other possibilities that cover Ranger (like an Antarian Ranger)


Scout/Ranger hardly touchs on the paramilitary part of what being a Ranger could be, its all Grizzly Adams stuff with a very few exceptions. As I see it we have more than enough creature skills (just fix what got broken), we have more than enough trapping (again just fix what got broke), but we have seen what little we have that could apply towards us being a paramilitary type of profession taken away.


We are not needed now to apply camo

A camp is not needed to pull out a bike in the wild

The current foods regen rates make having a camp for healing unecessary

Rangers cant effectively use /rescue as we tend to not have Tank type of templates, and rarely desire to have aggro.



I dont think Scout itself needs to be messed with at all..I see Master Scout as the pure "nature boy" profession, with Ranger being the extension into the paramilitary aspects


The Ranger grade traps should be usable against players

I agree Rangers should be able to see through Cover/Force Cloak (and it should be a very high lvl Ranger skill if not a Master skill)

I agree Ranger should have some equivalent to Force Cloak themselves (self only, not for groups)

There shoulds be Ranger specific weapons and certifications/


See I dont care about getting more nature boy skills..I have already found Scout covers all my needs..I dont need to fill up 4 more branches with the same stuff. I want Ranger to find a place in the post-CU world.


I feel the only creature/nature related things we really need are to fix the current bugs. Ranger should be all about how Ranger interacts with NPCs and other Players (I mean cmon do you want Ranger to be a PvE only template?)


So heres my paramilitary style Ranger 'alteration'


1. Camo- add a self only type of camo for each planet that acts likeCover w/ the same requirements(make that kit require more components and add it to the top if not Master lvl of the tree. We should also get Ranged & Melee defenses in this branch.

2. Camps - Allow Docs & CMs the ability to gain medical XP by healing players in camps rather than by combat healing alone (make them get more XP for being in higher lvl camps, highest XP gain in a HTFB). Make the camps persistduring combat. People would use the camps more if they didnt have to deploy a new one every fight.


3. Tracking - Change the UI to look like the map view that Surveyors get, and display the detected mobs on the map as dots and display names by hovering over their indicator on the map, allow setting a WP to the last known location. (not unlike the seeker droids but we wont get constant updates, but it would get updated if we do another areatrack.


Expand Area Track range to 1000m in all directions, allow Concealed/Force Cloaked targets within 64m be shown on your map display.


4. Traps - Change the Ranger only traps to be usable vs players (they are all state effects anyway).Leave the scout trapsas creature only. Replace /rescue with some kind of special which distracts a mob (like some kind of short duration decoy which they attack instead of you)


Rangers should have their own Master lvl weapon certification and weapons made available. (to complement our Battle Armor cert)



The Mantra here is to define Scout as what it really is (PvE/Creature specific), and Ranger as PvP/NPC specific with the req. for MAster Scout still in place.


All in all thse arent difficult things to implement and use whats already there and would give Rangers more of a role in the greater scheme of the game. Me I dont want to live my days simply being a wild game butcher.

That is the single best idea I have seen for a long time for an enhancement to Ranger

I love the idea, there are a lot of sound ideas. I really like the part about the traps being npc/player ones. They could always change the title to man trapping. I think camps need to play a bigger role in combat, maybe when they get the battlefields up and running again they can play a role.


I totally agree that we need more defense and a greneal ranged accuracy and speed bonus in the ranger skill set. What would it take to make a new rifle for rangers? Maybe a Pathfinder rifle that has a master ranger cert. Also it would not hurt to get a few new abilities for ranged weapons in the ranger skill set.


Your idea of camo for the ranger could be inplement with giving a ranger the option of building a "gillie suit" you would need parts from tailors and resources for the planet it would be used on. It could provide a cover/conceal bonus for the ranger that would hide you like the cover skill in rifleman only you could get a more shots off before detection. You would not beable to wear it with armour and it would be wearable for all races.

/agree. Nice one Kinsh.I don't recall seeing it mentioned before... but my memory fades with age... An alternative to this maybe similar to the Radiation Scanneryou have to use for some of the FS village quests. I would imagine it would be fairly easy to impliment as both these parts of the game are already present and could be tweaked for Rangers...

Kinshi you have the right idea and those points have been chimed and rechimed many times (just ask Owen )

The bottom line about Master Ranger is it should bethe "uber" vs. creature/NPC profession. We should be able to do and accomplish things no other player class can :


We are mastersof the environement--being concealed and able to stealth by any creature and NPC(with some limitations). With respect to creatures we should be the masters andare extremely knowledgeable onhow to make kills during hunts (regardless of weapon class) faster and more efficientlythan any other player type. We should be able to go through the maps virtually undetected (when reaching Master Ranger) by any creature.


As MR, our traps should be very effective against creatures and NPCs alike. PvP should be fun since we should be able to assist other players with powerful "rescue" and distraction tools as well as incapcitating other players long enough for our team-mates to make their getaway.


The Ranger community has worked long and hard for many of these things. We shouldn't give up and I don't think any of us will. Those that have, "oh well, their loss," I say.

There is a simple stat fix they could do to ranger any time they want to that would make it just fine for the short run. Zero testing time needed and almost no coding changes.


Just give ranger skill trees some general defense, accuracy and speed = fixed profession. Sure it could still use work after that, but if it had some decent skill mods in the tree it would be playable and not a waste of points.

Amen. I have a BH, but I'm getting to the point where hunting is not for me. I'm sick of the drama associated with it. Ranger seems to be a cool profession (plus I can still assist bounty hunters with Kashyyyk marks, for a price). But with the skill point cost of the profession I would be losing an incredible amount of defenses to take Ranger.

Hopefully soon you guys will get your revamp, and that will include this stuff that you guys desparately need. Being a smuggler, I know what it's like to wait forever for good changes to the profesion. I hope you guys get some loving soon.
