Thread: Hey Firefox Users: Ranger Forum Search Plugin.
- Open up your favorite Text Editor (I recommend the Open Source Notepad++)
- Save the blank file as rangerforum.src in the Firefox searchplugins directory (default= /program files/mozilla firefox/searchplugins/)
- Enter the following text and then resave it.
*snip*
Once that's done you can close firefox and reopen it. There will be a blank icon next to the words RangerForums. Click it and type in your search query...
All matching results from the Ranger forum will turn up in the resulting window!!
Like I said, Lithium searches can be wonky so I'm working on a plugin that was featured on AOTS a few weeks that will make google search sites as well. Basically... it would be the google search results window but with crawled results from the SWGForums. I'm testing it to see if I can get it to run through the lithium forums ... that should be done by tomorrow I think. Basically just a case of me gettin to it.
I hope you enjoy. This post has been archived at SWGRanger.com.
P.S. you can get a nifty icon to replace that blank space by reading the article at SWGRanger.comMessage Edited by WildBil2Me on 07-28-2005 11:17 PM

Very impressive versus trying to use lithium directly!

I had never even used that feature previously... I always go to google's main page anyway. I think I can type google.com as fast as I can click a button. There's something very non-distracting about the main google page so I had to do an areatrack to find where these other search features were hiding.

What's funny is that suddenly its not working for me. I'm checking the syntax again now to see if I can streamline it a bit.

Are you sure this doesn't violate any sort of forum policy? I don't know if it does but it might be worth sending a PM to one of the mods or TH/Tiggs to double check.
Also, I checked to see if it works when searching the whole site. I just deleted the line:
input name="board_id" value="ranger"
It's a nice change from "Sorry, the search service is currently unavailable. Please wait a few minutes and try again."
I'll use your plugin for my rangerly searches, cos it looks like a cool tool, though I have the googletoolbar plugin on FF already.

Yep that will execute the full search. I'm just not sure if its limited to 30days or not. There's a way to set it to search a larger time span which I'm going to confirm tonight.
You can also change the value="" part to, say, scout and it will search the scout boards instead. I haven't looked at how to get it working for professions or boards with multiple words in the title yet.
This is basically just an ... as I have 2 minutes project :-)

Unfortunately you will still get that message when lithium is busy, but the search bar will make finding that screen a bit easier. I've got a search setup that will use google to search the forums but the results are iffy. I'm trying to see where the shortcoming in the search parameters are so I can widen the possible results. Having NO idea what I'm doing its really just trial and error plus some careful attention to search strings. LOL.

Use and underscore for the space, for example TKA boards would be teras_kasi_artist
Although you may have to go through each board and check it individually, some of them aren't named with spaces, for example bio engineers board id is bio-engineer and core systems id is csystems whereas force sensetive forums id is forcesensitive
