Thread: Need opinions Rifleman or Pistoleer for Ranger

I have asked my PA and my friends (although not mutually exclusive) about whether to pick up rifleman or pistoleer to complement my ranger skills. I tend towards rifleman because in the future with the hunting blind the devs are going to give us it seems logical. Also being a non-combat class I think that being in the back with a big gun will be useful..

However that puts me out of range with my traps. I dont really want to trap....run....shoot....run....trap...

I am not a big PvP player, however judging by my style of play ( i use a lot of traps) i tend to be closer than ideal range for a rifle and it is nice to have a skill that allows me to defend myself when i end up (rarely) toe to toe with a beastie. The times i have used a rifle, i am too far away from the main body of the group, leaving me wide open for a surprise spawn. I think that while I lean towards rifleman (i enjoy the image of the hunter with their elephant gun) pistoleer may be a smarter choice.

What are your suggestions

Either OR, or none of the above. Work towards master marksman if you have haven't allready.

PLAY with what makes you Happy BOTTOM line.

Rifle is nice
pistol is nice
Carbine is nice

Everyone is gonna say this or that, use what you feel is the best choice for yourself and your habits.

I chose rifleman because I'm a glutton for punishment
I liked pistols and carbs as well. I pretty much stopped switching weapons a while ago and stuck with rifle it made me happy.

NOW it does ALWAYS make me Happy, warping pets getting capped by a nuna etc.

I was sad when i had to unlearn carb and pistols, a good health or action bleed is still good.

DO what MAKES you happy, Not what every one else says makes them happy, your the person paying the bill

Don't forget about melee options too.

Go for Carbine, it gives you the flexibility of both but is not quite as strong as either one. The laser Carbine has an ideal range of 50m so is good for prone sniper fire (prone/masked legsht2 x 4 will take down a pretty big crit before it notices you), then you can switch to a DXR6 or DH17 snubnose for medium to close range.

Carbine also works well in a support role as it gives a lot of effect hits (slow, dizzy, knockdown, area etc), crowd control I think it's referred to. The only thing to watch for is the high HAM costs, **edit** carbines will wound you so much the enemy just needs to look at you and you go incap [laughs].

should read

NOW it does NOT ALWAYS make me Happy, warping pets getting capped by a nuna etc.

I don't mean master marksman i mean as working on a variety of things, carbs, pistol, rifles

Sorry for the confusion

Personally I use some pistoleer and some bounty hunter. I've got enough skill points laying around yet to take the techniques line of pistoleer and the pistol line of BH.

I am really not sure what the best answer is, I am going up the BH pistol and LLC line myself but for some reason the carbine keeps popping back in my hands. I detest the warp bug going prone, my intial shots for rifle seem like a 60/40 chance to hit so then its time to get the pistol out if I am not in trap range. I like my pistol but at times does not fit the hunter image, the carbine seems to be... well the same range as my traps. I am not sure if that is a coincidence or not but I find myself leaning Carbine more and more. The high HAM costs can get ya if you are not paying attention but I think they Carbine is going to get some love in the next patch. But nothing beats smoking a pet with a LLC , if I can't use traps then I will cook em.

I chose Pistol because I like to get close and... right now they have the same range as a rifle! Yikes! I suggest trying out the Ranged IV skill suppression fire, or whatever that is called (warning shot?). It works like an adhesive mesh for one turn, rooting lower level creatures in place (I know it works on Tortors on Talus and Snorbals on Lok). This is really good if your trap fails or the creature gets too close.

I'm a pistoleer/ranged support specialist/ranger and i like the pistol, lets me fire on the move, needed when using thrown traps, and suppresion fire saves my hide alot when traps fail and i need to buy time to throw another one. Real strong template for rangers in my honest opinion.

First off...an earlier post was absolutely correct: Use what you want, whatever you feel most comfortable with.

I myself am a Ranger/Rifleman. I feel the rifle is simply more appropriate for the style of play I foresee as being fitting for a Ranger. With high level camo kits and mask scent I can lie prone and use Conceal Shot on high level MOBS with relative impunity. It makes hunting very effective, and it makes it feel more like "hunting". If that makes any sense. Because to be effective you have to be patient, sometimes stalk dangeraous MOBS to isolate them from a herd so you won't be aggrod by his friends.

Trapping is a bit of an adventure. I use this method to compensate for trapping as a Rifleman:

1. Use Conceal Shot from long range until the MOB is weak enough to kill with one more good shot.

2. Close to 50m. Throw trap. Throw second or third trap if time allows.

3. Finish the MOB with a well placed rifle shot. You can throw traps from prone, kneeling or standing. So I go prone and make sure to get the most accurate final shot possible. Warning Shot is great for getting MOBS to back off of you long enough to finish them, as well.

I think being a Rifleman (as well as a Ranger...props to us all for that!) requires a unique set of tactics and a patient willingness to maneuver the enemy into falling prey to your strengths. I personally find it very challenging, and therefore very rewarding.

Just my two cents. All Rangers are brothers...be it with rifle, carbine, pistol or LLC in hand.

Rifle is also a good call due to ideal ranges are differant on differant rifles, dlt20a 45m iirc, jawa ion 40m, all in trap range.

But play with makes you happy

I'm working up pistoleer line. I don't even have rifle one or carbine one. I am a big time trapper. I think trapping is the most underrated skill by non-scouts. People posting in the bounty hunter threads sneer at trapping. I think it's great and use it constantly. To me, pistol seems to work best with that, I like to be up close, trap and shoot.

Just my opinion.

I am a Ranger/Rifleman becase I believe that makes the most sense. Nothing against the Ranger/TK or Ranger/Pistoleer etc. To each his own.

But before you pick Rifle read the threads in their profession. We are not a happy bunch atm.

I am sticking with Rifle but take a look before you leap.

And this is my same opinion also why I have tried to incorperate creature handler into my template. A man of the wild should not only be able to hunt creatures but befriend them as well hehe. Well thats what I think atleast..
