Thread: New Ranger tracking dissapointment
Greetings.... i am a fairly new Ranger ( 0 1 2 0 ) i am disappointed with the way tracking works in this game.
When you areatrack...the list comes up and you can click on one of the creatures in the list....but nothing happens... be nice if an arrow came up pointing you to the creature or at least (as in EQ) you get an updating message telling you the direction to go....XXX is to the east...etc etc...
The Tracking Range needs to be extended...500m is too short..many times i have landed in the middle of a pack of reds where tracking did not show them in the area...
The tracking list should show the Con of the creatures.. the list should come up with the names in red or yellow..and even at higher level of tracking the level of creature
Main thing tho is that i cant pick from the tracklist and have a arrow of updating direction come up on screen..Be nice if tracking in this game was more like the tracking in Everquest.
uhhh once u leve it up it DOES tell u what direction the animals are in and how far they are away... i disagree with pretty much everything u said... first off via trackign u COULDNT tell the con of the animals or if it was agressive or whatnot i mean your character is lookign at tracks for gods sake =/ only thing u could tell via tracks is how fast it was moving and how big it is... and the direction it is heading.. thats it... 500m tracking distance is fine for me i have yet to run into any surprises while using it... honestly think about what ur asking.. most of that stuff can be told from an examine.... and the more u do it the more experience you have with the diffrent types of creatures by examining them apon site the less ull have to look at the stats of thigns...
area tracking is pretty much fine the way it is right now.. my suggestion to u is to play around with it some more... and level it up .. mine is at maximum and i love it it makes my huntings go alot quicker and helps me find what i what when i want it to.. just learn to use it better
Here is my take on the tracking ability...
Like the previous post the tracking gives you much more information as you level up and becomes VERY useful to yourself and a lot of other players.
Secondly, I actually like the lack of a waypoint, it gives me a feeling of accomplishment when i can take the information and find something or some one.
I will never forget the first time i tracked a fellow PA member from one city to another, he was shocked. I rarely use waypoints except for missions and when i die, i try to be a pure ranger and not preset a waypoint or ask the group for a waypoint. I know the general direction and i can find them anywhere.
just yesterday i helped a complete stranger find some baby pets to tame and received 20k for my trouble. I didnt aske for it, he just tipped me.
use it well and it will be your favorite ability

Also, don't forget that the devs are working on the /track skill, which is totally different than /areatrack. The main purpose of the /track skill will be to provide a waypoint to the nearest creature type you are searching for. /Areatrack will never have waypoints involved. Youwill use /areatrack to get a survey of the creatures around you, then use /track to set a waypoint to something that interests you. That's how it will work.
The next tracking skill you will get, Exbeastlord, is the distance portion of tracking. When you /areatrack you will get the direction and the approximate distance the critters or people are from you.
Here's a tip that seems pretty common sense to me, but many people overlook it or don't realize it. Your /areatrack is based on the way your avatar is facing and the way you are facing is cosidered your north. /Areatrack is not based on your radar compass north. So, if you are facing south on your compass and do /areatrack and you want to hunt something that comes up as being south of you, then you will have to turn around and go north. Clear as mud?
So, the easiest way to /areatrack, unless you are a compass guru, isto just take a few steps north to make sure your avatar direction registers compass northwith the game. It's just easiest to do it this way.
This isn't true - take another look. The directions given align with the compass ring on the outside of the radar. The arrow is always North, the ball is South. Doesn't matter which way you yourself are pointing, the directions will always align with this compass.

Unfortunately I have to disagree with some of your points. I absolutely LOVE area track.

I think that takes some of the fun out of it, that would be too easy if it gave you a waypoint directly to the critter. Besides you'll get more information once you get to IV, I think distance and direction.
The Tracking Range needs to be extended...500m is too short..many times i have landed in the middle of a pack of reds where tracking did not show them in the area...
I agree, I would like to see it at 750-1000m
The tracking list should show the Con of the creatures.. the list should come up with the names in red or yellow..and even at higher level of tracking the level of creature.
Not a bad Idea, personally I have a very good knowledge of creatures and have a good idea what they would con on me, relative to what weapon I'm using. So that feature I will hardly find useful, but some might.
Main thing tho is that i cant pick from the tracklist and have a arrow of updating direction come up on screen..Be nice if tracking in this game was more like the tracking in Everquest.
The developers aregiving us another ability the first that they have given us is "Area Tack" the reason they named it that is, all it's giving us is "very general information of what's in the area" It was never ment to be an all powerfull tracking tool. We will be getting a much stronger ability called track (not sure of the exact name). Where you "can" track an individual creature or player. With much greater distances with maybe a waypoint (not sure about the waypont part), so hold on I think you'll like tracking much better in a few months

my directions align with the compass, and I have no problems with /areatrack, although sometimes random things that werent on the list spawn by me, but that isnt all that bad.
hehe, i thought the same thing until i tracked some Anglers 250m North of my location on Yavin 4. I make my way in that direction and *POOF*.. a nice lair of Klikniks that spawned 3 Kliknik Shredders... that have a taste for deathblowing. Made my Master Ranger butt look very silly.
Greetings again fellow Rangers....

Fantastic...this is pretty much what i was asking for.. /Track ...now i will be able to single out a specific target from an /areatrack list and go find him.....and i see what folks are saying about areatrack.. you check the area for clues and follow a trail to the creature... i had in my mind that tracking is like a homing beacon..where once you get a lock on to a target you can follow it right to your target....
for now i am working up the Frontiering ( 1 ) and Tracking ( 2 ) lines..so i am Novice Ranger 0 1 2 0
