There's always a chance. In fact, there are a two chances: slim chance and no chance.

I'm pretty sure it's not possible (it certainly isn't likely) so you'd go through many many traps just to hit once, and by that time, you'd probaby be dead, so I'd stick to hunting some smaller game until you get to Trapping II or III. I never tried this specific experiment when I was Trapping 0, so I don't know, but I know that even at higher levels, I failed with traps more often than I would like.

That, and the Ranger Traps stink. AoE traps are good in theory, until you realize that you don't have enough points in a good combat class to take them all them critters you pissed off. I stick to mostly scout traps, though if I am running away from a group aggro, I've been known to throw a few Ranger traps.

In summary, go ahead and try to trap a Rancor, but make sure you've paid your insurance and cloning fees ahead of time.

Pickets are a pretty safe way to work the trapping tree until you get a little higher i think that i was getting 640xp per........ although i maxed out trapping xp the other day. it was kind of disturbing to know that i have tossed that many traps since mastering ranger

Really, honestly, trapping is so easy to climb up that you shouldn't waste a whole lot of brain sells fussing over it. Just grab abunch of cratesof wire mesh traps, or adhesive mesh craps, and go hunting. Throw traps like there is no tomorrow and you'll be up the tree in no time. I mostly hunted stuff like the various huurtons, pickets, bols, quenkers, stuff like that. Anything that is a reasonable challenge but not a real ass kicker is fine.

I agree with GoldmemberBria.

The best way is to go hunting and trap like crazy. In fact if you get in a group and say that all you want to do is trap..you usually get an invite.

The fast/grinding way is to get buffed and throw a wire mesh trap on a lone huurton matron, lone voritor up until level 2 trapping

Then, go to dathomir, buffed and trap kamuriths...and rancors...best way still is in a group.
