Thread: Question regarding usefullness of Ranger
Well, I've recently been looking into comparing the harvesting rate of a Master Ranger to a Novice Scout. So far the results are depressing (a Master Ranger seems to get only double what a Novice Scout gets). This isn't to say you shouldn't get Ranger, though. The Ranger tracking tree is extremely useful for a CH (you can find pets easier and you get more information about them as well, like special attacks). Right now, Ranger is probably not worth the trouble for the harvesting bonus. But the creature examine bonuses are invaluable as a CH (without Master Scout, you can't even see the difficulty level of a creature before taming it). If you just want to harvest organics, though, Ranger appears to add very little (I'm still trying to gather more info on the harvesting rates but it's slow).

then I suggest you only go up to hunting IV.
The master ranger only harvests 30(ish)% more than that. If at +100 harvesting, you strip a critter who drops 100 hides, I will get 100 hides as a master ranger, and you will get 70ish.
You will be able to kill the critter faster and with less damage to yourself. Add a bit of good veghash to the mix and you will be able to rival a master ranger in harvesting amounts.
Honestly, dont bother with ranger as of right now, we dont have the harvesting capability that we believe is useful.
hope this helps.
