Last night I lead my PA up to the krayt hunting grounds. So I hit area track (I have track IV), and check to see what our hunting options are. I confidently proclaim that teh best thing to hunt at that moment were some dragonettes 257m to the south west. I get no reply from my group. Why? Because they are fighting a Krayt dragon 70m behind me! How am I picking up baby dragonettes and missing Dragons that are right behind me! What the hell is going on here?

There are a few bugs with /areatrack. It can be quite useful but often leads to just such embarrassment. One major problem has to do with the way spawning is currently working. Things don't spawn somewhere 500m ahead of you--they spawn on top of you. This leads to areatrack saying nothing is around when 5 seconds later you run into a creature. The devs are working on the spawning (not exactly sure what they are doing but they have at least admitted that it is a bug). Once the spawning works better, /areatrack should be more useful.

One time my group was hunting and I was areatracking for us...

I proudly exclaim, "Hey we can get some durni's 250m south"...

my friend goes.."Yeha, I see them"

*SIGH*

Okay so it has happened to others. I feel slightly less like a fool...but only slighty.

I am going to avoid future embarassment by /tell to the group leader instead of broadcasting my findings.

I find it is usually best to explain the shortcomings of the skill to the group. Most people will understand (every profession has its bugs). And if you are tracking for a group, it is useful to have your map up (ctrl-M) and check the map for buildings/lairs and red dots before announcing your findings. If something appears during your tracking, just track again. As long as you pay attention to all the information you have, you rarely get embarrassed. I've even managed to impress a few people with my ability to find stuff even when it was because of the map and not tracking. Turning your radar up to 128m vs. 64m also helps. And just to warn you--many people believe that Ranger /areatrack works more than 500m away. I've even had people ask me to track things planet wide. Mostly because they had seen a Ranger find a specific creature on a several km treck. I just explained that this was probably because the Ranger knew where to start looking (knowing the planet really does help. Don't go looking for krayts at Fort Tusken--start near the Krayt Graveyard or one of the skeletons [north of Wayfar is quite good]). Good luck with things.

Happens to me all the time. What you learn is to keep your mouth shut, lol. The less said to your hunting group the better. Saves a lot of embarrasment.
