I am currently a novice with both, however many people have told me that rifleman is the way to go for combat.

I do only PvE and was wondering which would be best from a solo combat perspective and also what other skills I could learn to compliment my solo ability.

I have looked over many of the threads here but none with definate answers and a lot of people have thier own styles of play.

Pike is actually an excellent choice for PVE. The areat KD and dizzy attacks are killer. Make sure that you take up medic to heal yourself because the HAM cost (till combat balance) are outrageous.

well my 2cents would be , choose the combat proffession you like the best.

Iread alot of places to the rifle was the way to go , but icouldnt leave mypistol behind, so i choose pistoleer.

One thing to remember is as ranger you will be killing beasts likeall the time- no fun doing that with a combatstyle you dont like

I'm not disagreeing with the other comments, but here are some from the point of view of someone who's a pikeman (3142) and a master ranger.

Don't do it.

See, pikeman is absolutely the worst combat profession, bar none. I'm only sticking with it because when the Combat Revamp rolls through it should be a good profession. If you want to play a melee profession with a high damage output and a big weapon, I recommend Swordsman. On average their weapons are faster, have less of a HAM cost, have at least as good damage output, and have more options for medium armor piercing than pikeman weapons. Plus, swordsmen get plenty of specials that are at least as good as pikeman specials.

Good points to playing a ranger/pikeman:

  • Pikeman specials cost a frikkin ton. Literally, you'll be able to last through 3 fights without specials and end up just as hurt as if you used two specials in one fight. So if you aren't buffed or armorless, specials are absolute suicide. This is a plus because, as a ranger, you'll have traps to inflict states. Instead of using a stun attack, you can just throw a sonic trap (145 combined HAM cost versus 25 Action!)

  • Pikemen have a better range, being able to still hit opponents at 8m. So theoretically you could throw adhesive mesh traps on your target, get in position 8m away, and it wouldn't be able to hit you. The problem is, you'll end up throwing about 9 traps in the fight if you want to keep it at bay most of the time, and that's kind of rediculous. The traps don't last a real long time.

  • Melee fighters get to harvest corpses as soon as they drop. Riflemen have quite a trek to the corpse to be able to harvest. This usually means that it's gone by the time they get there, if the group members forget to wait on you before they harvest.

And to represent someone who doesn't cater to the profession of the week...

I am a master pikeman/near-master ranger. I love it. Sure, pikeman has issues like any other class, but I love it. I can tank better than most of my friends, and when I get in a jam, the AoE specials save the day time and time again.

We don't have any easy-to-find uber weapons, but the loot drops of high end lances/LVAs/VLs are there on Dath...Nightsisters. I enjoy the pursuit of my prey with my LVA in hand. And I love the fact that I can out harvest any of my guildmates when it comes to meat gathering.

The trick is to find what you enjoy about the profession. With the exception of traps, I make use of all of my ranger abilities. I maximize my harvesting. I use rescue to save our jedi from a mob of rancors (which is where a elite melee prof works best). I proudly show off my spanky camps. I use area track to find more creatures with the resources I seek, or to find another pack of NPCs/creatures to hunt.

I personally hated rifleman...too much sitting back...bah. I'd rather be right up front protecting my friends from the wild beasties.

But the last comment is very true about pikeman, HAM costs are a pain...get used to buffs and armor to be effective.

I'm also working my way towards Pikeman/Ranger

I'm 4112 in Pikeman, and 1142 in Ranger.

My question is, what would ya'll recommend I do with my template from here...

I also have Novice Medic (currently 1020), and I have Master Brawler....

I'm right at the point where something's got to give. Should I reap the benefits of traps and trade off the skill mods at Master Brawler? Or should I keep master Brawler and keep only a little of the harvesting tree in Ranger?

I love the idea of being a Master Ranger, but I want to be a tough fighter too. Any help would be great, and thanks for the posts so far!

Another question on the same line (annoying arent i)

Being a Twi'lek, when I started I did Master Musician, so my HAM naturally has more action, I have had lots of problem getting into a full set of Ubese. I was wondering if you wear your armor all the time or only when you go out to hunt? I have been wearing my dresses and costumes to do this for a while now with ubese gloves and boots on only.

I have a macro that switches between armor and clothes, and I usually don't don the armor till I've thrown the trap to pull the critter. And the armor comes off as soon as the danger's gone.

I just created a wookie that is a novice in both, I love it. this character is strickly PvE. I have a bothan fencer that is a tusken for RPing, a human MBH for hunting jedi, and a zabrak MHS/rifleman that is my favorite so far. All I needed was a wookie outdoorsman, lol. It seems to be fun so far. The wookie is named Axubacca, Ax is my nickname so if anyone is wondering why its in all the name, there ya go.

-I would support keeping & balancing the current combat system.
But I get the feeling they don't care.
