I'm sure this has been said before, and I'm basically just looking for confirmation, but I'm under the impression that tracking will never be "fixable" from the pathetic state it is in now because of the way the spawn system works (if you can use that word)?
Few things "exist" in the game until you're near them (or past them) so how can you possibly track them.
Am I the only one who thinks that the spawn system, rates, tables, etc, are totally jacked in this game? Not just b/c of what it does to tracking, but just in general?

One of the options to fix this problem is to add a /track command. This will be different than /areatrack. The /track command will send you through a series of waypoints (or other means) until after an acceptable period of time the creature you are tracking will be spawned, just like missions spawn lairs. I imagine that boss creatures (Peko Peko Albatross for example) might not be spawned this way (or they might set it up asa percentage chance if you are tracking peko pekos).
And as for the spawn system...
I can't tell you how many times I've walked over 2km on Dantooine and never had a naturally spawning creature show up on my areatrack. And this is supposed to be an "adventure planet" meaning high danger. So, yes, something needs to be done about this.

First of all, /areatrack isn't pathetic, it works pretty well 70% of the time I use it.
I believe it is fixable but it may require an overhaul on how the spawn system works. One thing many people feel would be a helpful fix would be to track lairs rather than or in addition to creatures. Lairs spawn before the creatures do so you'd see a bit more results that way.
What they need to do is fix the system that determines when and where natural spawns occur. How it works now still confuses me but it seems like if there are too many or not enough people on a planet, nothing spawns naturally. They should separate natural spawns from mission spawns somehow and generate the spawns by quadrant. Some planet's spawns are so borked that they are simply dead.

This could be fixed in one way to add nests to the display. If u could see the nests, pile of rocks so on u would know that there is a spawn in the area. Also u can tell kinda what spawn it is by the lair name. But some times the prom is that they dont spawn liars untill u are on top of them.

If, however, a lair is named something like "a sickle rasps nest" that means it is someone's mission and should be left alone. On most planets after you've been there for a while, you know that creature X spawns from a pile of rocks and creature Y spawns from a warren etc.

My personal opinion is - you have no clue what you are talking about.
Areatrack finds static spawn effectively. By static, I mean spawn that is there, regardless of player activity. Such as the pirates, boar and BH crew in the quests. I used /ar to find them all.
Areatrack can also be used to find new spawn, if you know how to use it. Run through an area, notice I said run, get your lazy butt off the speeder/swoop. Wow, look at all the spawn.
The main problem is in the lack of spawn depending on the server's current player population. More players = less random spawn, so say the Devs. And any random will be where players have been - around cities and towns - and probably low level crap. Sundays are a good example. Right after server reset you can find tons of spawn, random and static, all over. Come later in the day - nada. Too many people in the cities for random spawns in the weeds.
More game experience, and reading of past posts on this subject, would have given you your answers.

I love areatrack ! Since i have had my alt become a ranger, i have found myself spending more and more time with the ranger. Ok so areatrack isnt perfect, nor is the current spawn system, but it is a very usefull skill if you know how to use it. I've found countless Krayts, a full set of BH armour, got the Mark of the Hero etc etc and i know i would have struggled like mad to do this without /areatrack.
Few points to be aware of :
1: Wait 5-10 seconds after dismounting before using areatrack
2: Run about or use a mount rather than a speeder, i prefer simply running - you get to see your surroundings, things dont spawn after you've swooped by.
3: Be methodic - its much better to think about your 500m track radius, and the area your in, and plan how you should move & track rather than just running about madly tracking every now and again.
4: If your looking for something specific and rare, track at the right times if you can. Everyone's server is different, but im sure you all know the peak times on your server
5: If you can, work in a team or pair of rangers. Two rangers working together can be awesome !
6: If your tracking for someone else, make them run about looking too ! Too many times ive been asked to track krayts for a group, only to see them all sitting down having a nice cup of tea in my camp ! Make them work too !
7: Get out of your composite and wear something suitable ! We are rangers not part of the compo clone army ! (ok so this may not help you tracking, but at least you'll look better !

These are all great points. especially number 7. Armor? what's Armor? Just give me a Scout Jacked, pants, and boots, and i'm good to go.
