A jedi asked me to help him find 8 ancient bull rancors. As I'm on dathomir, getting carnivore and avian meat, I thought this would be easy - that they spawn from dying lairs spawned by mission terminals. He offered to pay but as he had saved me from being slain in another context I said I'd do it for free.
Three hours of fruitless searching around sarlacc POI and not one. Harvested 15000 units of rancor meat, smashed endless lairs, but no ancient bull rancors.
He went off a sad man.
Last night, I saw one. Went to 65m to avoid aggro-ing it. Silly young reptilian flier attacks - gets harvested. Look around and the ancient bull rancor is gone. Areatrack - no rancors at all. Move 100m to allow for hole. Nothing! Vanished. Get desperate as my chap was now on his way from the wilds of Tatooine. Repeatdly move and areatrack. No rancor.
There were no players within 500m. But there was a night-sister dragoon. It is entirely possible that someone killed the rancor and was killed immediately all while I was swatting the silly birds. But that's kinda far fetched.
Travelled with this chap for 2 hours. Didn't find one until one appeared on areatrack 450m away between Imperial prison and starport. Again it vanished from areatrack. This time I ran pretty fast in right direction but to no avail.
This has become a bit of an obsession. I remember killing lots of them durign a meat spawn that drove chefs to insane prices. They just appeared on areatrack as we finished missions. Now here I am wandering the wilds of Dathomir unable to track one, let alone kill it.
Anyone got any tips on finding them?

With Dath so heavily populated because of the village and FS grinding it will. I will say our new all purpose catchall ranger tracking phrase
"Catch it at server up"
Remember we learned that a planet can only have so many objects on it? The more players the less creatures. Your seeing this come to life

Things are always depsawning. I highly doubt someone swooped in, destroyed the Rancor and swooped out before you could see them

The "catch it at server up" idea is new to me. My experience that things spawn when a human players enters an area. For example, if you use a swoop, whizz along over 500m and just stop, you see things popping out of the ether. Are they spawned and its the graphics updating or are they being spawned by you passing through?
Could be I've completely misunderstood how spawns work.

No your right on how spawns work. But the more populated the area the less that will just pop up. And the lower the chance for the truly rare to pop up.

Yup, hit the servers just after they come up, do a /who... 2 players (in your general area) but the place is heaving with life.
An hour later, /who spits back a truncated search 32/33 players, and cough all critters in the area.
Am also getting more and more cheesed off at the fields of harvesters and factories that have sprung up all over the place. I still say they screw with our spawns. I still say they screw with our livelihood if that is the case.
All so some artisans can get shedloads of any old metal to churn out speeders for XP to trade in for FS. And it's going to get worse whenever the flyboys get here. Yup, it is. You mark my words.
"I remember when it was all fields round here" said the Ranger.
"Wow, have you been playing long??"
"yah, about 6 weeks"

As one of the artisans who harvests on Dath I have to disagree with you. A lot of us arent grinding FS at all thank you. And are getting that better material for foods, armor and weapons for everyone.
Remember we arent all 13 year old jedi wannabes

at a mission rancor lair?
I've always found them at natural lairs in heavily rancor populated areas.
I would start around the mutant rancor cave andareatrack around there.

I can't go 200m west of the northern mining outpost without hitting several piles of rock with ancient bull rancors. Just hug the cost there, and you'll find them. At least on Eclipse that's where they are at.
