Thread: Pet Trapping

I love the changes coming in the works for the ranger but the most important thing seems to be missing.\

Why can't my traps affect trained "pet" creatures this makes absoutly no sence. I was involved in some PvP rebel vs imperial combat last night, one of my opponents had a trained cat of some kind and when i tried to throw a trap i was informed "that creature is not an enemy". Funny because it was attacking me. Is this a bug or just an oversite? This needs to be fixed.

Thanks

I think the CHs are blameless in this instance.

Pets are also soldiers and droids, not just animals. Currently, I am guessing there is not much distinction between having an ATST and a durni for a pet (Do the ATSTs stand on one foot and wiggle their ears when they need mind healing?). Joking aside, this is primarily a large dev problem, one that may be months in the fixing. The blanket no-traps on pets policy does suck, and should be changed, but right now it's something we gotta live with.

Fully agree of course that (not only Rangers) but scout traps should affect Creature pets. I also believe that any natural enemy of my creature pet should attack it even if that enemy is neutral to me (yellow)! This game absolutely needs more risk. (With mask scent at Master Scout, I've basically got no fear running around now, and I think that needs adjustment too so there's greater risk).

I think there's an even bigger issue. The Ranger class is a PVE class, no question, and what we need are several different traps that will affect PCs in PVP combat - not one stupid AE stun or something, but short-duration snares, or AE debuffs to aiming efficiency and the like. Or a positional change bomb that knocks the enemy to kneeling or prone for a couple of seconds. The idea of making Ranger traps where you have to drag or path an AI-driven creature across it to trigger is interesting, but IMO still leaves the ranger out cold when it comes to PVP.

Considering you can fire guns through the side of a mountain, our running skills aren't much of an advantage either against another player.

sorry but I have to disagree on with this last one;

traps for people are more for the commando-tree, sure u'd like to have advantages but like u say it, the ranger advantages itself are PvE intended, only a few things may give an advantage in pvp but are not intended to be so: Terrain negotiation but its not directly a factor

Absolutely agree. Traps vs PCs is a bad idea. At that point, Ranger trapping tree becomes a required addition to the BH/pistol tree combo. Now, Ranger traps vs CH pets should absolutely be implemented. That will pull enough yahoos to Ranger, but gives us a viable skill to bring to PvP even without camo being effective against PCs. Maybe the CH's should be calling for this as well to help leverage the higher CL cap argument.

Here Here!

As the elite hunters we would seem to be the natural counter to the Creature Handlers. I have a sinking feeling that the CHs cried nerf on us back during beta, but that's just a guess.

Hoping to get a response on this issue

This is just ridiculous. A ranger in an advanced society does things like setting tripwires (oh -- wait! They ARE adding this to affect NPCs, which incidentally are humanoid), mines and snares which in modern day warfare are used frequently by guerilla tactics in areas where concealment is possible. The U.S. Marines have a Ranger division which is supposed to be the elite fighting force. It absolutely makes NO sense that an Adhesive Mesh could root a rancor or Tortu, which are HUGE, but not a human.Commandos don't make traps, Rangers make traps.

Furthermore, I said Ranger is a PVE class because they designed it that way. The game, with the very strong Imperial vs. Rebel theme, encourages PVP and you've got an Elite class here with no PVP ability. So, I'm sorry, but I strongly disagree with your view. Terrain Negotiation does not affect PVP because you can fire a blaster through dirt in this game and the enemy doesn't have to negotiate terrain to get line of sight. The ranger's skills are 99% useless in PVP and the 1% that is useful is the ToHit bonus.

Sure I'd like to have advantages? All I want is to be able to apply the skills I've aquired in my class in any combat situation. Ranger has NO advantages and in fact in PVP creates a huge disadvantage, because a master ranger has 144 points tied up which can't be applied to player vs. player combat.

Anyway, even the Ranger developer disagrees with you. NPCs will be subject to tripwires, because it makes no sense to restrict the class to creatures.

I agree Tanoa... but I think it's only 140 points if I don't remember all wrong...
