Thread: Any Rangers w/o marksman?
The nature of the class makes a combat skill a near necessity. Solo, you certainly have to kill in order to harvest, thereby earning scouting xp. Whether you chose a ranged weapon or melee is completely up to you.
Having novice marksman w/one box in a weapon would allow you to kill animals, but they would be fairly low level -- I'm thinking paralopes. Considering that your average scout xp yeild per kill would be around 69, it will make the road to master a very long one.
I suppose you could use probots to greatly assist you... but I don't believe they can really "tank" can they?
In short, the path you've described seems very challenging. I don't think it would be impossible.. but it would certainly be slow. If you enjoy challenges and don't intend to level fast, I'd love to hear what strategies you end up doing.
If you are interested in leveling fairly fast, I'd certainly put more into a combat profession than 18 points.
-- Just my 2 credits, though.
Yea, I decided I'll master DE, and go Wayfar IV, Front. II, Tracking II, Traping II (maybe IV). I won't get dath. camo kits or HTB but I'll be able to at least get Tier IV in marksman, maybe even get a novice rifleman (or pistoleer).
Also DE might be getting some new combat droids so that might affect my end result. Who knows..
Then once you complete your Ranger skills you can drop the combat skills so that you can learn the DE skills.
Ranger will need combat skills but your DE will not.
If I were you I'd put 1 point novice marksman one pointRifle. The DLT20a is available at inetrmediate rifle and there are some very decent DLT20a's out there. After a good slice you can have a farily viable weapon on your hands. I believe in the area of 150-200 damage and 6.0 speed. Couple this with head shot 1 and Phen Dart from scout tree and you have a very good combo.
Another plus with the DLT20a is the low HAM costs in comparison to a Tusken Rifle. I used this Rifle all the way up to Sniping 2 on the rifleman tree so its a good rifle... and probably the best weapon for 18 exp points.

I'm in your shoes (sort of) as my goal is Master Ranger, Master TKA. I'll also have 18 spare skill points. At the moment, I have skills in all the other starting professions except artisan and have been gradually surrendering them. I am starting to give up my rifle skills but am keeping the ranged support for the defence mods. Ultimately, I will probably wind up with Medic+Organic Chem I so I can make wound packs. I will miss making the higher level meds that I can make now. I might go with Pharm I instead and buy the meds instead of making them.

Hey, I looked at my skill points and I found out that If i'm going to master DE and master Ranger I'll only have 18 skill points left over. That means I can either go Marksman and 1 box in the pistol, or medic and get first aid I. The question is, can you be an effecive ranger w/o using a gun? Before they announced the new ranger stuff I was only going to half master ranger and go up a few boxes in Rifleman, but now I think I want to master Ranger for sure. I'll have to see how fun the new stuff is.

When you are new and playing with the starting professions, it costs 15 skill points to start. It is then very cost effective to pick up a bit of everything but do nothing very well, because you only spend 2 points for each intermediate skill and 3 points for the Advanced. You can be a maginal medic/scout/artisan/brawler/marksman quite easily.
When you cross into the advanced/elite professions, it is exactly the opposite. Specializing is the most cost effective because as you climb a column in a profession you start out by spending the most points - for example, Survival IV in Scout cost you 5 points, but just to OPEN the Habitat Engineering tree in Ranger costs you 5 points. Thus dabbling "sideways" in an advanced/elite profession tree wastes points.
Consider that AdvancedTrapping III and Advanced Trapping IV cost a total of 5 points, but just to START Field Bioscience I cost 5 points. While it's completely up to what you want to do, Frontiering II is costing you 9 points, when you could max out Adv. Trapping IV for only 5, and have 4 left over to spend somewhere else.
Be a generalist in the Basic Professions, but when you get to the Advanced/Elite professions, pick what you want to do, and do it really well - just my 2 cents!
I just read your post and the replys... you dont need a weapon skill bro...
I would prolly throw the rest of the points into Creature Handler (droids and Pets) or Tech Business 3 and Survey/orDomestic3 to sell droids and get a better survey or experimentation ability.
Now if you do go CH, just to be decent you would have to waste 16 of your 18 points just to be semi decent because of the recent changes. 6 for novice CH, and 5 for taming and 5 for training(bigger and better pets). The last 2 points could go into Domestic arts or Surveying.
GL - and dont follow the easy route do your thang without the guns.
