Thread: Giving Up Ranger

I've been 1 skill away (Survival IV) from Master Ranger for a time now, and decided to give it up and find a class that's more combat-oriented.

Ranger is a great profession chock full of great skills that are wonderful *supplements* to your main character concept. Unfortunately, Master Ranger takes 140 skill points to achieve - a pretty extreme cost for a skillset that's largely academic. Useful? Absolutely. But something to base a character on? No. Ranger skills are the kind that you tack on with extra skill points for useful extras, not base an entire character around.

I liked Ranger, and had fun, but I'm completely ineffectual in pvp (nothing to due with Ranger itself - I just need those 140 points back) and need something else to get good at.

I'll come back for a peek when the profession develops further. I like what's been done with it, but I can't justify the 140 point investment for skills that I consider to be largely extras.Camo Kits are woefully expensive and hard to put together (particularly given their sketchy success rate), so I'm not really any more invisible in the wild then a Scout. Ranger traps are basically junk. The Tracking tree is the one tree I regretlosing - as a CH it is hugely useful, both in Tracking potential pets down and examining their abilities and stats more accurately with higher Creature Knowledge. And camping is fun, but everybodyand theirsister can do it to a fundamental level- and I've never seen anybody use my crafting stations, as theyall have droids that do it for them.

All in all, Ranger is a lot of fun ideas that haven't quite come together yet. I fully expect them to, butI look at Ranger skills as nice-to-have extras - not core, fundamental game-making abilities. Camo Kit improvement would beTHE place to start -I don't think it's unreasonable for a Master Ranger to be 100% invisible in the wild (although those he applies camotoshouldn't be quite so high). If my character could solo with that kind of success rate, I'd have kept Ranger for sure - but he can't Ranger trapping is borked, but is getting some good love down the road. Everybody has tents - nobody cares if it's huge or tiny, as long as they can break out their droidsfor healing and pets for tanking. Tracking, again, is the one thing I feel is awesome as is.

Ranger is a great profession - justtoo muchcost for me at this point Good luck! ~J

One more little bit - Camo Kits requiring flora basically requires me to have Novice Artisan, too- in essence, requiring me to invest 155 skill points for Master Ranger ~J

"Camo Kits requiring flora basically requires me to have Novice Artisan"

-Camo kitsdo not require you to be an Artisan.

- It is however more convenient and cost-effective to have the Artisan skills (That's why I have the skill myself).

- If, however, you want to use the skill points elsewhere, you may do so and rely on the bazaar or a personal contact to provide the necessary flora.

I can agree a lot on the issues brought forth. I spent the past three months getting to Master Ranger and it's definitely not something I give up. I don't quite know where everyone comes from, but in the Gorath server, there aren't very many MRs at all so when I throw out a High Tech Field Base Kit, people are pretty impressed. I had only seen one Field Base Kit prior to me achieving MR and only one High Tech Field Base Kit from someone who had Frontiering 4 but I haven't seen either of them around at all.

The people I group with definitely want my HTFBK or FBK simply because it's more effective, we heal faster, both crafting stations are used extensively, and while I don't need the exp anymore, I really like knowing that my major tents are requested. They'll even wait in the open until I make one and I like that. I like knowing that my tents can go closer to buildings and aggressive lairs more than anyone else's single-seat camp. I like knowing that my passive abilities for camping and tracking are requested and that my traps are the first thing out the door in combat against creatures.

In all, this is not a post flaming the poster about the good things about rangers as he's already stated good things about it. I do agree that it's a lot of points to invest in a passive non-core class that's more effective when coupled with a combat class. For combat, I have my TK tree, hehe...

Hehe

My problem was that I was a Creature Handler/Ranger - I had what basically amount to two support classes, and not enough skill points left to focus into a good combat class. Although extremely complementary, Ranger & CH aren't strong enough by themselves to build a character around. All I could do in battle, basically, was watch my pets fight and hope they came out on top... ~J

"My problem was that I was a Creature Handler/Ranger - I had what basically amount to two support classes"

- Many players consider Creature Handler to be a combat profession, where the Pet is the weapon.

- The profession is on the grey line separating Combat and Support indeed.
