Thread: My ideas to make Ranger a good profession

Rangers right now are easily in the top 3 of most worthless professions in the game, especially ever since they removed the need for camps to call anything. My idea is to turn Ranger into one of the best support profs while still being horrible by itself. However, using Ranger as a supplement to your build can turn your toon into the best PvE monster there is, at least against animals. I feel that animals should be calling Rangers daddy and bowing down or running scared whenever one shows up. So without further ado, my ideas:

1.) Revamp of the trapping tree, all of it. I feel that the current traps [flashbang and sonic pulse] are more militaristic and would be suited better in the commando field tactics tree. Two new traps should be placed instead, a net and a bear trap. The net will delay creature for up to 30 seconds at Master Level and the Bear Trap will do initial damage and Immobilize [meaning that they can still do damage, just can't move] a creature for up to 20 seconds at the Master Level. The length of delay may also be determined by the quality of the traps but since I'm not that big on crafting I wouldn't exactly know how to get a system like that working.

Another big aspect of ranger traps is that it should work in PvP as well, but at a 50% decrease in potency at the Master Level. Meaning that at Master, throwing a net will delay someone for 15 seconds instead of 30. Thus, trapping will become a very sought after line to the likes of Bounty Hunters and people that love to do animal PvE.

2.) Tracking. Just fine tune it a bit and knock out the glitches.

3.) Survival. Mostly useless except to showoff your cool tents. Can't really change that unless you put back in the camp requirement to call things. I think the to-hit bonus's should be added into this tree and give it some crazy bonus's. Make Rangers the masters of killing animals.

4.) Wayfaring. Camo kits suck as is... something should be done to make them extremely wanted and that's to make them work in PvP as well. This line will be mainly a PvP line and the idea is to add Guerilla type clothing that helps camouflage and gives certain natural resists [ie cold and heat] to the ranger. I think like... Wayfaring I should make the Ranger invisible to radar when they use a camo kit, Wayfaring II should make them untabbable [meaning that the player actually has to target the ranger instead of cycling with tab], Wayfaring III will make them completely invisible [if this is possible] until they move or shoot and Wayfaring IV should let them be invisible while crawling until the shoot or change posture and at Master they can be invisible while walking but will break visibility if they start running.

These are my ideas to turn Ranger into a good profession. As you can see, by themselves rangers can't really do much but as a supplement they can increase the killing power of any combat related profession. A lot of these will be desirable to to Bounty Hunters but Master Bounty Hunters can't have 3 of the desirable tree [Wayfaring, Tracking and Trapping] so it might force BH's to work together against Jedi Marks, like one can go wayfaring and tracking while the other goes wayfaring and trapping so one tracks down the jedi and the other immobilizes him. Just some rough ideas but I think these concept may help the Ranger to become a desirable profession without making them uberly unbalanced.

Good list. Many of these ides have been suggested in the past, but I thank you for your input.

Nice ideas, however if Ranger skills are only good for enhancing otherproffesions, I feel it's time to totally rethink the ranger concept. I like the current Ranger concept of being the ultimate survivalist and hunters, but it's simply not true and most likely will never really be what the devs had originally invisioned. The concept simply isn't working out.

If I had my way, I'd change the current "commando" title to a "Heavy weapons" title, and make the current Ranger template a special forces/navy seals type combat template which will resemble BH to a point but substitute the Investigation and LLC trees to a Stealth and some type of NPC traps/throwables tree. The current Ranger skills can simply be folded back into scout. This starts to make more sense to me as a think more about it, and makes Ranger and BH closer relatives like they should be.
