HowTo: Fish

Well, I'm going to start this guide by copping out and referring you to the best guide to fishing I've seen yet, VolstedGridbans /burstfish Guide. It's still the best one out there

HowTo: Harvest Mollusk and Shellfish

Getting Equipped

First of all, you are going to need a Shellfish Harvesting tool. This is an artisan (Engineering III) crafted item made using a schematic obtained from one of two quests. Once the schematic has been learned you retain the draft schematic in your datapad even if you drop Artisan completley.

The actual harvesting tool can be made by anyone who has the draft schematic in their datapad.

The Quests:

Short way: Speak to Vardias Tyne, under the bridge, Anchorhead. Sends you to kill a BH that's got him as a mark. On return, sends you to take a bantha statue to a Dim-U monk as proof that, depsite being a bantha murderer, he does hold the beasties in high esteem. (You can keep bunging the statues in your rucksack till you get bored and then offer them on the bazaar / give as gifts etc later). Reward, about 4000cr and a schem.

Longer way: Speak to Rakir under the canopy on the outside of the walls, Wayfar. (Come on, you're a Ranger, you KNOW how to find an NPC...). He'll give you 4 short missions, from which you'll earn about 10k and, on completion, you will get the schem.

Getting the Meat

Find a body of water, stand in it, select and use the hervester tool.

The harvester is a hand held tool which you have to remain ATK to use*. The easiest way to use it is to assign it to a HotKey and then fire that to use.

You will then get a random quantity of either shellfish or crustaceans.

NOTE! Shellfish and Crustaceans do not stack, you will end up with lots of containers in your inventory. The easiest way to get them to stack is to drag them into a container, such as a rucksack or pocket.

* Yes, it can be macroed. No, Im not telling you how. It's not THAT hard to work out, lol.

HowTo:Milk

Milking a creature is relatively simple if time consuming.
First, either mask scent or conceal yourself with cammo. this prevents the animal becoming 'spooked' and you being unable to milk it. (Creatures can also become spooked if they are attacked while you milk or something happens nearby to make them become suddenly alert)
Target the creature, hold the mouse button down till a radial option "Milk Creature" appears, select that.
You will get a sysmsg "You calm the creature and begin milking"
You will have to keep following the creature closely otherwise "The creature has moved to far away for you to continue milking".
When you have emptied the critter you get "You have successfully milked this creature" or words to that effect.

NOTE! Milk (of the same type from different animals) does not always stack, so you could end up with lots of 200 unit containers in your inventory. The easiest way to get them to stack is to drag them into a container, such as a rucksack or pocket.

Tip: If you have two creatures that are pretty close together, try milking both at once. Twice the milk in the same amount of time.

Which creatures have most milk? Basically the higher the CL the more milky goodness.

What creatures have milk? A good rule of thumb is "If it's female and the lairs spawn babies, it'll probably have milk" or you can refer to this list:

HowTo: Find Eggs

Eggs are easy to find. Simply target a lair, any lair, and get the radial option "Search Lair". You will find either nothing, some eggs or some creatures. Keep searching the lair until you no longer get the option to do so.

NOTE! Eggs do not stack, you will end up with lots of containers in your inventory. The easiest way to get them to stack is to drag them into a container, such as a rucksack or pocket.

This thread is a compilation of the work of several rangers and scouts to whom I extend my thanks and acknowledge their hard work in preparing the articles which I have referenced.

Mollusks and crustaceans do not stack either. The tool can be macro'd (shh I didn't say that) and used very fast if you have some 400+ brandy being it drains the mind when you use it. It is random which of the 2 you will pull up and you'll have to stack them yourself when your inventory starts to get full.

Hehe, I used to just stand with my inventory and a bag opened, dragging stuff over as it 'landed'.

Just popping back in to tidy a few bits up, layout and stuff.

This is a great post. Fishing has always been the biggest thorn in my side. Now I can't wait to tryand improve my fishiing skills.

The list of milkgivers is also very handy.

I've just one thing to add about milking - you need to firsteither mask your scent or be camo'd, or you will 'spook' the creature when you approach it to milk.
