Thread: Rangers and some ideas

I've never posted here, and only just started checking the boards since becoming a Master Ranger.

My experience with being a MR has been the following. I harvest for the healers and crafters in my guild. I also am the radar for a group, tracking animals mostly, and while defending our very own rebel base, act as an early warning system against intruders. Occasionally I set up the super nice camp, but the crafting stations rarely get used. I camo the group occasionally, but someone always gets agro from beyond NORMAL range anyway, so it's a liabilty more than a helpful skill.

The point of the above observation is that I'm great in a group. Of course, solo'ing is always a possibilty also, but since I'm not a CH MR then I don't dare take anything on that's above white con.

But rangers should be more, and we shouldn't settle for less. So here's my big ole giant, dear santa, wish list for rangers. Because, after all, ranger can mean alot of things to alot of different people. There is the D&D ranger, there's the U.S. Army Ranger, there's the Rescue Ranger (I am just kidding), there's the Tolkien Ranger, and I'm sure that there are a few different ranger versions either real or fictionalI'm leaving out.

I've talked to a few of my MR friends, mainly the ones who trained me up, so bare with me if their ideas and mine make it on this list. Perhaps some of these ideas have been listed here, for that I apologize.

Dear Santa,

I've been a good ranger, I'd like the following please, k thx.

TAG. Target Aquisition Gun, Master Ranger. The theory here is that the gun gets three charges or so, on a two minute timer. Each charge calls in either an AOE artillery or airstrike effect. Why should the ranger get this? Because we are pretty **edit** sneaky... that's why. We crawl in, quickly (that's a feature), and call in the strike. Now of course if the devs were ambitious enough rebels would get an xwing flyover, imps get a tie bomber flyover, and neutrals get some kind of pirate or merc ship flyer.

Gilly Suit. (haven't confirmedthe spelling on this one.) So your a master ranger and you get camo right? Well I've seen the PvP suggestions and this is how you make camo for PvP. Master Ranger only skill, would go well if you were a Sniper and a Master Ranger. The gilly suit makes you blend in with the environment. This should not be useable in city limits. Basically, you should have to stay pronefor your blip to not show up on radar. If you kneel, stand, or attack youbecome hostile in PvPif you are overt. This is mostly a PvP skill but has other uses as well such as sneaking past hostile NPC's and Creatures.

Taxidermy. Ah yes, who wouldn't pay top dollar for the head of akimo mounted in their home. This should be available to even the novice ranger. As a novice lets say you can preserve small creatures. At master, it's the full sized stuffed rancor in the guild hall.

Camo Kits that actually (animation required) show camo on someone's face. I just think that would look nice.

More specialized camps. Like for instance:

The Medical Evac Camp. Your doctor group mate just bit the big one, not to worry, throw up your MEC. Complete with factional cloning station, so the enemy can't use it cause it's closer to the fight. That's right, rangers should have a camp for this one single purpose. The penalty, (or balance), would be that since you didn't clone at this camp you come back with wounds, but hey... it'll do in an emergency.

The Air Evac Camp. "Calling in for pickup, mission complete." So there ya go... A camp with a shuttle pad, I've seen them all over while doing missions, art is already in place, now let's make it a functional ranger camp. Throw up the camp, it has a shuttle land in it, (again would be nice if they were factional shuttles), with a terminal, everyone hops on board. If there must be balance then charge at the terminal for pickup or have the camp on a timer, which can only be used once an hour.

The Forward Observer Camp. OK, here's what I've learned. Im a walking radar station. So... give me a camp with a radar tower in it to boost my range. If they were really ambitious....

The Fire for Effect Camp. Now the forward observer camp has an artillery piece. That overt group of imps/rebels closing in from 1000m... how about a little area effect artillery strike. Whooohooo.... Alas, for balancing issues the cannon fires only every 20 seconds and has a minimum range of 128 m.

Enough on camps.

Now for other skills, this list may contain some old school ideas.

Spirit Animal. That's right, the master ranger goes on a quest, (content involved), to find her/his spirit animal. Now this could be done a few different ways. Once you discover your spirit animal it could either be a pet, that grows stronger with time or it could be a skill that you use once every 20 minutes or so. For instance, a melee character finds out her/his spirit animal is Rancor. So every 20 minutes they get a skill called, Rancor Rage, which lasts for 20 seconds or so and grants them immunity vs laser weapons. Or say your spirit animal is the (stupid bird on endor that diseases the crap out of everyone) and once every 20 minutes you can disease someone. Now the idea here isn't that your spirit animal is a durni granting you the ability to be soft and cuddly. This should be a hard quest, one that takes time, but one that grants you a NICE ability you can use more than once an hour.

How about, the ability to swim fast. I'd love to see rangers outswim everyone/anything. Rangers have an affinity for the outdoors, burst swimming should be an ability just like burst running.

What about the ability to drink from rivers and streams? Wouldn't that be nice? Ever/forage in the middle of anice little river and fail to find anything worth foraging... and been dying of thirst?

I'm sure I could bore you with more of my unoriginal ideas so I'll withdraw to my little camp and be a good, thankful ranger.

Just remember,

Ranger Lead the Way.

Mm'kay, right now this just screams "Everquest in Space" to me. By all means don't stop trying to think of things but this oneI donot findappealing. Well, not for this game.

Hmm... never played EQ. I read this book, I don't remember the authors name or the title, where this american indian guy was on another planet and he had this weird connection with some of the animals there. At any rate, not an original idea, but then again... neither is the term, "EQ in space" =)
