Can we actually Define the role of a Ranger?

I have always thought of rangers as being the good guys. We are helpers.

I thought that our job may be to help other players in the wilderness when they are in a jam, as I have done on many occasions.

We can live off the land, surviving trips through harsh environments that would kill other players; not through simply killing everything we cross, that would be the bounty hunter or commando way. No, our way is using silence and stealth, we can sneak around that which would otherwise combat us.

I'm sorry if this comes across as a rant, but I have heard many complaints about being a ranger and the ranger profession in general. I wanted to say something positive.

I guess the novelty of this profession hasn't worn off on me yet. I still enjoy viewing myself as a protector and helper of the innocent.

I loyally serve those who have need of me.

I wholly agree with your philosophy on being a Ranger.

I help those in the wild who appear to need assistance.

I guide new folks to some of those interresting places on hunting planets.

I don't kill everything in my sights, only taking that which I need.

I very rarely log in towns, prefering to "sleep" in the untamed wilds.

LatelyI have been fielding lots of questions about whether or not I like being a ranger, and I tell everyone, thishas beenmy chosen profession since day 1, and I will always be a ranger. I just love the mystery of being a Master Ranger. Somewhere inside of me I can hear people saying in their minds, "He's one of them Rangers. Weird folk they are. What is he doing here?"

Anyway, not to sound cheesy now but I have to say it!

"We live for the one, we die for the one"

Another class of ranger I know, but I love that line.

Agree with the wilderness aspects. Helping noobs on hunts is fun. Took one on her first "big game" hunt yesterday - bagerasets. Yeah ok, I solo them - she was reaping xp and having a ball. She even solo'd a baby with her CDEF, and a good time was had by all.

A second aspect, one I have said before. In PvP or PvE I am the recon element. I go in first, scope out the area, tell the others what's going on, and wait for reinforcements. If things are working right, I get in, get intell, get out. In PvE I have literally crawled onto a battlefield (Drall v Corsec) without taking fire or being noticed. In PvP... someday we hope that will be the same.

So yeah, I wander around, harvesting, helping those I see in distress (with one exception - one guild is on my doo doo list, I watch them get run over and ate, then laff as I walk through and finish what they started) and generally having a good time.

Guys,

The problem with making a definition like this is that its all keyed into your individual playstyle.

And considering that there are about 15 different kinds of Rangers, from the Aragorn style to the Capt. Miller style, it's tough to pin it down.

Hehe

My playstyle is more a moral codecs... but the best way to describe it.

I agree to an extent that it depends on your playstyle. But it also depends has much to do with the profession we chose.

Rangers are not tanks and flamethrowers. We are not the artillery. We are the knife, the blade, the quiet killer, and the recluse friend to those who are in need.

That is the setup of the profession. We get to choose if we engage or not, if we kill or not. It is what separates us from Bounty Hunters. I will be fine with the T21 rifle and a Power Hammer for my weapons, I need no special Ranger class weapon to make me feel superior.

I've been able to smile as I've thrown traps on critters that make other players say omg. I hope that eventually, it will be a setup so that we can be reclusive, and still have people come to us for help.

If your playing style dictates cutting a swath of destruction through the forest as you go, then go with Bounty Hunter or Commando, they are better equiped to do so anyway.

If you enjoy the skill of the hunt, being able to observe from a distance the wonders of nature. If you ever have gone to the top of a high mountain and just overlook the landscape, that's when Iknew that Ranger was for me.

I'm not saying it has to be like this for everyone. Some complaints about the harvesting, the camo kits, the field base kits have been legit.

But I think some others have been of the mind where they would rather have been BH or Commando's, always looking for more firepower.

I have been satisfied so far, I look forward to more improvements, but I enjoy the stigma of being a Ranger as much as the abilities I have achieved.

I'm more the Ranger Smith type. Always chasing after that picnic-basket-stealing bear, Yoda. Or something like that.

Hate to say it but there is no "killer" bit w/o a combat prof... and to even get to Ranger you have to have one, but you could drop them all for no-com after getting Master.

From the moment I read the available skill descriptions, I knew Ranger was for me. I don't view Rangers in SWG as anything like the typical Elven Ranger you'd find in any D&D party, but more along the lines of a Highly trained advanced Scout. Someone who knows the lay of the land, expert in moving across these lands, and becoming one in unison with the wilderness.

Though, this scenario is stuck in my head, and has been since buying the game. I added the camo kit thingee, because I just thought I would be able to make one from day one

"1000 meters from that populated Imperial Base. The Ranger's Base camp is now full. Teeming with Rebels who know their life could be at an end after this night. The last 2 Scouts went to gather info. Neither made it back. The Ranger now stands alone. He is the only one capable of making the dangerous march through the Klikniks and Crystal Snakes that block this Ranger's path to the Imperial Base on Yavin IV. With careful calculations, the Ranger pulls his Camo Kit out of his pack. Carefully applying it to his body. Knowing it's not going to save his life, but it should buy his fellow Rebels enough time for him to give them a report. So.. Camo Kit applied, Base Camp comes down and the Ranger sets out to recon the Imperial Base. He makes it swiftly though the first line of foul beasts, through the denizens of this horrid planet.. hoping to make it to see some numbers... He gets closer, then falls on his belly.. quietly checking his surroundings.. careful of being detected by an Imperial Scout.. he crawls on his belly.. gets as far as he can... and.. Enemies sighted! *gets on communicator*.. Ok folks I see 2 AT-STs blocking entrance.. 4 Stormtroopers blocking the flanks... here's what we'll do... "

Now that would be awesome.

I wish to speak a word for nature, for absolute freedom and wildness,as contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil,-to regard man as an inhabitant, or part and parcel of Nature, rather than a member of society. I wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization: the minister and the school-committee, and every one of you will take care of that.

I have met with one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks,-who had a genius, so to speak, for SAUNTERING: which word is beatifully derived "from idle people who roved about the country, in the middle ages, and asked charity under pretence of going "a la Sainte Terre," to the Holy Land , till the children exclaimed, "There goes a Sainte-Terre," a SAUNTERER-a Holy-Lander.
