Thread: should starting professions cost less?
So I've been thinking about our skill point shortage (and other players shortage) and how the starting professions novice skill blocks all cost 15 skill points. I started BE last night, thinking a master ranger/be tissue manufacturer would be an interesting combo, and that maybe if I had the points I could do some cloning as well. to my dismay I found that if I take BE 4-0-4-0, sack my rifle abilities 1, and keep master ranger, basically I look like this:
master scout, master ranger, marksman 4-0-0-0, medic 0-0-0-4, rifleman 2-1-0-0, and I'll have like 2 skill points left over I think.
basically the problem I'm wrestling with is that if I do what I plan, I'll pretty much always suck in combat (to a degree), but at least I can keep master ranger.
So after all that, I've been thinking how much better life would be for everybody if they brought down the cost of the 6 novice skills from 15 to 10. they would still cost more than any other skill blocks, but would allow a little more freedom to players... heck, even redicing from 15 to 12 would be great
I think it would benefit players from all professions to have this, but naturally the first people I thought of were my fellow rangers, and how we pretty much get master ranger and an elite combat prof, or an elite crafting prof, or a tiny bit of both (meaning not enough of both to really be very effective)
I know this probably isn't the place for this post, but I didn't know where else to go with the idea. At elast I was able to voice my opinion in a place wher eI won't get flamed to death over it
See you guys on the other side
maybe I just have to bite the bullet and fork over another 15 bucks a month in order to have the stuff I want...

Or wait for Pub10 and unlock your second slot - that's my plan.
My second character will probably be a shipwright, to supply Silicon with his flying fix.

Ah HA! I hadn't thought of that
I had always thought that skill points should be valued differently, more in line with how the boxes can be combined then the "class-ness" they form in a profession. As it is now, they serve as a "level-limiter" and I would prefer that they should work more dynamically, in a way that reflects power balance more closely.
Unfortunatly this is a HUGE job to do, and I think they did it the current way to get SW:G out the door (I would imagine). It also makes it more predictable to "plan" your careers out. If there was a way to plan out everything in this new "dynamic" skill point set perhaps it might fly. For example, how are you going to know, in a dynamic system, that the combination of Rifleman/CM is going to cost more then Rifleman/Swordsman? and, should it? You would have to have a feature in-game to map out all the combinations ahead of time and see where the new costs are.
Now, possibly, there might be a cost adjustment from interdependant professions that are not required in pre-reqs but certainly are needed to get anywhere, like ours. I don't know if there is quite another example like ours (SL perhaps?) and you could go the SP adjust route or do like what we have been asking and add in all the to hit, damage, defencesand efficiancies that would have been in those professions bought by that added skill point adjustment.
I guess we all just assumed it would be easier to add inthe latter.
So never mind me, guys... I'm just cranky because I can't have my cake and eat it too
If only I could be master BE and master Ranger and stand a snowballs chance against a durni..... /shakeheadsadly

That is a good idea too. This discussion should, perhaps, be moved to Core Systems from here on?
