hehe i know some people will have looked and seen revamp and ranger in the same sentance and started drooling, but no this isnt about our revamp, simply changing the set up of our forums.

Im not saying dont post 'crap'. This 'crap' is what i love and the complete random (some would say insane) threads about things such as ranger hats have kept me ranger for sooooo long these have to stay.

What i mean though is that there is going to be a change in the way our forum is set up (in terms of having specialised threads etc). We are going to havethreads on:

Ranger Revamp:

TheProposal:

Dedicated to building our very own community wide revamp proposal (clear, consise and not over crowded) that we think would be our ideal profession. We need to get everyone's involvement in this and make sure its all what we want, everyone will be adding to it and everyone's opinions will be taken on board. In this thread we will add certain bits as our other discussions progress and start shaping the look of our final document, this thread is only meant to discuss or express concerns over structure and things that have already been discussed about in their respective focus threads.

TheFocus (insert name here):

This is linked with the first thread in that we discuss area of the revamp, however in this thread instead of discussing the whole revamp, each week we change the topic to a specific area of the possible revamp, dictated by feedback in the proposal thread, and go into great depth sorting out our opinions, idea and if we think this skill/tier should be included or changed/modifyed etc.

Idea Archives: (can you think of a more suitable label?)

Contained withinis a large selection of ranger made skill/feature proposals which everyone who stops by will have access to. This area will continue to be updated as and when needed so keep those ideas flowing in (i like to read them heh). This will also act as a reference guide to our inspiration when creating our community revamp proposal.

Ranger Cabin:

This selection of threads specialises in information, guides, updates, incoming and any other possible threads that credit our profession.

Whats In Camp:

We will have our own 'what's on deck' sort of thread called whats in camp. This highlights what im doing and what area we should be focusing on each week, think of this as the control center of the ranger forums. It will tell us what things im asking the devs (if anything) what issues we are working on in the focus thread and any possible issues that need resolving. Expect this like patch notes format where there are bullets under certain headings, short and sweet that just enable us to get a clear picture what is going on this week.

Rangers For Hire:

This thread will contain both the active ranger list AND the active ranger population thread under one centralised thread. Hopefully all visitors will head to this thread and find what they need.

Camp Fire Stories:

As we currently have, no change needed there, a top quality thread full of inspiration.

Wilderness Insanity:

In the wilderness, no one can here you scream, silence becomes your only ally and the only conversations you are likely to have are to plants, imaginary friends and ultimatly yourself. Coming back into town after a long hunt can often get you very odd looks and comments whilst you sit their enjoying a beer with your imaginary friend dave. This section is devoted to all that is classified as insane, down right wierd and could possibly get you a nicehomewith a view of the sea and paddedwalls all around.

Guides/FAQs/Links:

This section covers a wide range of resources that could help up and coming rangers and links to various guides that have been made over the years. This thread also includes important posts such as the holocron post, and the ranger websites. Youll find the tracking guides, profession guide, template: pros and cons and lots of other goodies in here.

So there you have it, the new ranger format. Its not meant to confuse people, just have a set of stickies in our forum that will hopefully inform, focus our efforts to some degree and set us up for anything that is coming our way. If all goes well we will be a good stepping for when our revamp comes along because we will have all the right info in all the right places and very easily accessible.

Do you guys have an feedback on these? any changes you want and any modifications you would like to see?

Summary:

Ranger Revamp: The Proposal

Ranger Revamp: The Focus (Insert topic here) <- Will be replaced each week with a new focus thread and archived within the proposal thread

Ranger Revamp: Idea Archives

Ranger Cabin: Whats in Camp (updated blah blah of the blah)

Ranger Cabin: Rangers For Hire

Ranger Cabin: Camp Fire Stories

Ranger Cabin: Wilderness Insanity

Ranger Cabin: Guides/FAQs/Links

Just two things:

1) What's the distinction between the proposals under the revamp and the proposals under the Ranger Cabin? I wasn't too clear on the difference, but then again, it's me.

2) Will the "for hire" list and "by galaxy" list still be kept separate, just under the same heading? Might prevent some folks from being bothered who aren't necessarily for hire.

ah ok

Theres like two heading:

Ranger Revamp

and

Ranger Cabin

The Ranger Revamp: Proposal is what we will be making bit by bit as a community over the comming months hopefully shaping it into somethingrealistic and fun to play, sort of our ideal profession (without too many skills and suggesting millions of different things).

The Ranger Cabin: Proposals: Is a section where all other ranger ideas such as the outdoorsman, outdoorsman 2, recon unit, tracking, modular camps and every other design proposal we have ever come up with will be stored. Sort of a link to the best ideas we have come up with.

The Ranger Revamp section is specifically aimed at our own revamp (incoming), so we will put forward very feasable ideas, set down what we want (as a community) and address any other issues that may come up in the future. We will get a very detail 'core' set of skill we would like included and try push those to the devs too.

Its just a way of focusing our ideas in one place, let us all express our opinions without writing up massive proposals and ultimatly make our revamp special.

As for the ranger for hire and by galaxy threads, they will still be the same threads, just link to in a seperate main thread which will be stickied to the top of the forums. Nothing will change, just will form part of a sub menu system with the stickies.

Owen, you've been here how long? and you're ALREADY shaking things up?

One suggestion-

Put the proposals both in the same spot- at the start of the new "Ranger Revamp" section, have a link to all the old ideas threads, with something along the lines of: "These documents are the source for many of the Ranger ideas for our revamp, etc., etc." It'll make it a lot easier to find where all the ideas for the revamp went, because many of those ideas could almost be called full revamp proposals in and of themselves. It'll make it easier to come up with feedback if everything is in one centralized location.

BTW, I am already working on a third version of the Outdoorsman which will take into account the changes that are forthcoming. Obviously, this will change the dynamics of the system, so it can't be fully written until the official version is released to Live, so I'm just in the preliminary stages, looking at what will change.

Other than that, it looks good Owen--keep up the good work!

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

Looks like a good way to keep things. I especially like the mention of bullets. What's in Camp will be a throwback to the days of NRaas's Ranger issues threads.

Also, it might be nice to have some sort of link to some of the more important fun threads (like the Forum Ranger thread, the RATGWNIWNU thread, the Ranger Hat thread, etc). Mainly the ones that still get mentioned in other threads, potentially confusing people who haven't been around for all of it.

Constructive criticism about the purposed threads, Owens:

Given the rate of ideas that come out in our forum, those threads you purposed are going to get very long, and very uninviting to read through, in a relatively short time I imagine.

Would it be possible for you to be the only one who can post to these threads. Then ideas that are well accepted "in the wild" can then be copy pasted by you on to the appropriatethread. This would cut down the inevitable clutter that will accumulate on those threads, and it will allow ideas to be refined "in the wild" before they were added to the "Official" threads.

Basically, keep the forum as it is for "draft" ideas and dicussions, and make your purposed threads the "neat version" of everything.

Oooh, I thought he was going to start letting power go to his head there... Think "juggling cats" and you just KNOW where that would lead.

It is incredibly good news group practise to have spcifice tags/bullets for posts that 'belong' in a specific thread. It lets us find things easily, make a quick browse over new posts to see if theres anything significant (not that the 'crap' posts aren't amongst the significant ones, btw) and it helps keep a wee bit of 'structure' to things.

Just a quick one. If a poster makes a post that's not tagged properly, it IS possible for them to go back and add the tag to their post title, isn't it?

(Did that make as little sense to you as it did me? I seem to have forgotten how to speak English, lol)

1: Thats what i was thinking

2: What would you suggest? I was going to put them under the Ranger Insanity heading in the links/resource section but if you feel they command a more important place then ill be happy to make the ajustments.

I was thinking along the lines of archiving in some areas. In the 'whats in camp' thread i was thinking keeping one post that i update each week and simply add to it each time. The previous week's post will be moved down in the post, dated and changed to a lower profile (less striking striking text color). It would look sort of like this:

Whats in camp:

7/1/04 (english set up btw hehe)

What Im Doing:

- Drinking Guiness of course

What we are doing:

- Drinking Guiness with me of course

- Debating the impact of Guiness drinking on univercity life

Ranger Revamp:

- Proposal: Added 'Ranger Role' Section

- Focus: Started discussion focus onprofession structurestruction

1/1/04

What im doing:

- Buying my Guiness

What we are doing:

- Buying your Guiness

- Pondering theviability of a discussion thread about the impact of guiness drinking on univercity life

Ranger Revamp:

- Proposal: Set up proposal layout

-Focus: Started discussion on ranger roles

That sort of thing. So from the first post you can see what previous posts were about.

Now im going to work with All's post writen on my hand, still trying to work it out, hopefully ill have something when i get back in 8 hours

That seems fine. I just didn't see a Ranger Insanity section listed. Anyone who reads the stickies should find it if it's in there, I just didn't see it expressly mentioned as being in there. I like the random stuff.

Sort of like instead of being in the links sticky, they would have their own 'Ranger Camp: Wilderness Insanity' thread or something along those lines?

What you think?

I like the idea of them having their own little thread. There are enough of them that it could clutter the links thread up and they are interesting enough that people would want to read just them.
