Instead of pigeon holeing us with carbines, why not make it so that any one of the novice combat professions is the pre-req along with Exploration?

for example:

apprentice rifleman/exploration

or

apprentice pikeman/exploration

Would that be too difficult to code?

That way both the melee Rangers and the ranged Rangers win!

The thing is if they did that for us, the would have to do it for every combat profession in game.....not gonna happen.

It is a good idea at heart I must say. It's one that has been tossed around for a long time with alot of professions.

It's always been glossed over though, not because it would be hard to code, but because it drastically alters an existing system dynamic. Pre-reqs are set for all professions and have been since the offset of the game (I can't speak for early Beta but I'm pretty sure it was as is now.) To change this is to change one of the core aspects of the profession system - making a profession have one dynamic requirement usurps the existing norm.

It also creates problems in the long run for the game. Everytime a change needs to be made to the marksman or brawler branch of a profession not only does that profession need to be tested, but so to does Ranger.

Make a change to rifles 3 and Ranger needs to be tested as does Rifelman. Make a change to Pikeman 2 after that? You're retesting Ranger to see if its getting broken (over powered or underpowered).

If you set the requirement in stone then its not as big of an issue when you need to test any given combat change.

actually WeiQuin,
this is a great idea, and much more suited to the playstyles we have. ive always thought that the greatest asset that the rangers had was its diversity. and now it appears that there will be much less of that.

i really hope they take your suggestion to heart, because as it stands now, it appears that they chose carbines for no particular reason than to avoid skill point stacking.

This is actually pretty good. If as you mentioned in a previous post, they're looking for a skill point sink, this would be a way to do it, without exiling half of the combat professions. I think this is much more feasible than some other ideas. I still think we should have to have Exploration and Trapping though.
