your trapping level should be at 80 if you want to trap level 80's.
best traps? p-dart. that is all.
for more info, look at the PSA that is stickied at the top of the forums about trapping.

trapping is based on trapping skill boxes. your ability to use a trap is soley based on that. There is a threed in the upper portion of the forum for rangers that will help you.

Below is a list of the CL of creatures you should be able to trap at each level of scout/ranger (taken from GrandPops post) with your Trapping Level (TL) appended.
Novice scout - CL 5 TL 5
Trapping 1 CL 10 TL10
Trapping 2 CL 20 TL15
Trapping 3 CL 30 TL20
Trapping 4 CL 40 TL30
Master scout CL 50 TL50
Novice Ranger TL50
Ranger Trap 1 CL 60 TL60
Ranger Trapping 2 CL 70 TL70
Ranger Trapping 3 CL 80 TL80
Remember, you can increase your %chance of a successful trapping by eating the chef food Dweezel (can modify TL by as much as 20pts)
Also:
You can hit a creature with more than one trap, giving you multiple rewards from the same creature.
Trap XP is now awarded 'on the fly' rather than at the kill.
Trap XP is not currently reported in the 'fly text' (purple numbers above toons heads) but you can monitor it if you have the Onscreen Skills Monitor open and select the Trapping skill from the drop down menu.
Some traps create a bug that prevents other traps landing properly, others can be fired one after the other and stacked, yet others won't give XP until the state effect they apply has subsided.
Some creatures preCU were harder to trap and their 'to hit' modifiers may still be in place.
Novice scout - CL 5 TL 5
Trapping 1 CL 10 TL10
Trapping 2 CL 20 TL15
Trapping 3 CL 30 TL20

Novice Ranger TL50
Ranger Trap 1 CL 60 TL60
Ranger Trapping 2 CL 70 TL70
