Last nite, Kyru and me had some fun doing some missions. We stumbled across some very nice tricks!

First of all, we seem to have the ability to use the environment: A crushed dewback!

If that's not enough, we also encontered a a new dewback! Neither Kyru or I have seen this one before.

Last but not least, very important, before Kyro joined, I've been around as well and found a number of issues with the LOS system (Line of Sight).

Ofcourse we don't control the environment, but it was nice while it lasted

Nice pix, especially the new flavour of dewie. You didn't happen to do an /exam on it and check to see if its stats are different from the ordinary ones?

LOS on TC. Yup, it takes a lot of gettingused to, and there are, to put it mildly, 'quirks'.

I think the LOS is being calculated either from your weapon to the targets centre of mass or from your centre of mass to the targets. That'd explain the odd 'I can see it but can't shoot it' nonsense.

Think of it this way, if you are in the ditch and can see over the ridge, without raising your weapon at least to head height, you won't be able to get a clear shot. Of course, standing and firing, you ARE lifting the weapon to headheight and into your eyeline but STILL get 'you can't see that'. That in turn leads me to think its more a question of where your characters centre of mass is in relation to the ground and targets CoMass.

The actual positioning of player to target is also only an apporiximation, depending on server load, lag, etc. so that wher eyou see your character and where the system sees it are often two different things.

If ditchrunning could be used as a proper way to avoid detection by MoBs it could be incredibly useful. Imagine how close to a mark a /concealed ranger could get if they were also able to use ditches and deadground to hide from the targets sight....

Ah, I did wonder about the LoS thing, not been a ranged profession for a while now, so couldn't remember if it was always like that. Is a bit quirky at times!

The part that annoyed me was that it still counted it as your turn even though you didn't fire (because you couldn't see) so you have to wait the cool-down period out (as a lowly marksman still, this is a couple seconds at least). With other actions, say healing, if you can't heal yet (due to heal-timer) it jumps right onto the next action in the queue. I did have a drawn out battle with some NPC because he kept popping in and out of a ditch, and I as out of 'sync' with him. He'd be in the ditch, I'd go to fire but can't because of LoS. He'd then pop out, during which time I'm in the round cool-down, shoot at me, then hide in the ditch again just in time for my turn...so again no LoS! When I closed the distance I just couldn't hit him because of my crap accuracy (rifles).

Not sure if this is a bug or a feature as I've not seen any docs detailing the new LoS system, but it seems to me that the LoS check should be before the turn and if there's no LoS then just get on with the next action, which may be another attack so I guess you'd get a lot of no LoS messages. Any links to LoS docs (gonna search in a mo, but links would still be good).

Probably gonna go on TC again later today, so will mess around with it a bit more. Ah well, should make the game more interesting.

As for the crushed dewback, he shouldn't have kept saying 'Jehova'....

PS, Dariane,
That tip about colouring sentances (like mask scent running out/failing) helps a lot. Got a kinda psycadalic (sp?) thing going on now, probably need to tone it down some.

The question is this: Given that God is infinite, and that the universe is also infinite, would you like a toasted tea-cake?

No unfortunately not, we got a bit surprised by it

And afterwards we didn't Well,at least I didn't

This could be very true. However, if the pic is right. the top of the gun is in line with the dewie, so it should have been able to see it.

I think that's the main problem here... Maybe we can try it out someday ourselves when duelling on different places. I do notice, when kneeling, I get more "no LOS" then standing up tough.

If ditchrunning could be used as a proper way to avoid detection by MoBs it could be incredibly useful. Imagine how close to a mark a /concealed ranger could get if they were also able to use ditches and deadground to hide from the targets sight....
As far as I can see it, and tried it, it does work. Not all the time tough, due to mentioned quirks. But I was able to keep ina ditch, with only maskscent running around feral bantha's, dune lizards and dewbacks... Gave me some nice scouting XP

LOL.... I will say it in a new thread for those who don't/didn't know.

LOS problems stem from the basic calculation, which is:

foot to foot.

centermass to centermass, or eye-to-centermass, etc would make for less quirky LOS.

EDIT:

and a "sandreaver" is a dewback lair boss pop (CL26)... swgcreatures.com has them listed since feb '04, but I'll admit that I haven't seen one before.
