Ok, thought id give you a little heads up abouta threadthatis coming your way shortly regarding ranger testing in the cu. After a little pm by Phen i realised a few of you might be thinking 1: what the hell is happening? 2: what needs testing? and 3: do we have any plans?
The answers are:
1: we are testing how ranger interacts with the new system
2: lots of things heh
3: yes we do
Ive been working on a document here and there for some time now (around 2 months+)about what needs to be tested, what you should consider and what to expect with some little tips here and there. The document contains various sections covering many areas related to ranger and things we will need to ask ourselves.
The idea is to let you do the testing and let you decide what you feel comfortable with testing by highlighting what things need to be considered, what questions need answering and what areas you could provide feedback on. Think of it as a small guide sort of thing that shows you various situations and issues that could be problem areas for us.
Anyways, ill leave it at that. Dont expect a massive doc, just a consise collection of points and issues that need adressing. Once testing starts i will hopefully be able to set up (or with help from other testers) a updatable issue list with all your feedback and issues presented within it.
If you have any issues or questions that you feel will need answering by testing, slap them down here, if i havnt included them already, ill add them when compiling the thread.

Owen,
Let me know, I'd be glad to help with this if you need it. In the meantime you'll see me in the In Concept Forum trying to get my hands on some info while TH is present.

I apreciate that mate, yeah i think ill need a hand.
So far i have the core areas such as:
1.0 RangerInteraction
1.1 Ranged
1.2 Melee
1.3 Support
2.0Ranger Viability
2.1 Solo Hunting Viability
2.2 Group Hunting Viability
3.0 RangerProgression
4.0 Trapping Effectiveness
5.0 Camo/Mask Viability
These arnt all the areas we should cover, just the core areas, and thats why im trying to emphasis with this. Each section has its own little discription then questions, potential issues and suggestions.

A "general concerns" area is usually a good idea if only so that there is a place for everything that needs to be somewhere but doesn't fit anywhere else.
Also, it might be worth adding something for Rescue (although that probably fits under trapping).
Let me know what I can do to help.

Different headings now.
Just waiting for all the alpha testers to get back to me about the department heads idea.
So far you, phen and bil are on board. I have 6 new departments i need delegating and are obviously rescue would come under one of those areas (Combat Viability: General)
The 6 areas are as follows with general concerns being covered by me aswel as camping and survival (considering its lack of work in the cu). Hopefully all the departments will be sorted so i can start tonning down my jugling act.
1 Ranger Interaction: Any issues with skill clashes or playtyle issues, any changes in play needed? Think fun factor and enjoyment
2Combat Viability (Hunting): Specifically related to how well we can hunt. Aimed towards to the creature aspect, keep me up to date on hunting viability. Work closely with general department.
3Combat Viability (General): Groups, solo, as a skill point investment. How viable is ranger in a general sense. Think group apeal, think solo vs group. work with hunting department.
4 Trapping: This department is aimed towards sourcing issues related to trapping and trapping effectiveness. Work with other departments to discuss points.
5 Camo/Mask: This depart is related to how scouts and rangers avoid combat. Effectiveness, viability and usefullness are all areas that need exploring. Work with other departments as needed.
6 Skill Progression: This department focuses on the continual progressof ranger over the players development. Not only just ranger progression, but the template's progression, how easy is it tolevel? How does it feel when also leveling up another combat profession or support profession etc.

Count me in Sparky, just as cannonfodder, meatshield, spear carrier tho, none of this 'responsibility' for me.
LOL, y'all know I can't count.
There's a few weird hybrid templates that I want to work through (those sort of 'ranger with a bit of... those artisan/merchant/typist' kinda things cos they affect one or more of my toons on different servers. Other than that particular bit of self interest, if I'm on, I'm available for 'stuff'

Owen,
Maybe look at it in terms of the Profession Roles diagram, the one where every profession has a role except Ranger.
The four defining roles of combat are:
1. Tanking: Defensive Ability
2. Damage Dealing: Offensive ability.
3. Crowd Control: Battle flow abilities.
4. Healing: Healing one's self and/or other players.
If we define for the devs how we fit in to each of those, then the gaps should be obvious.
Unless of course Rangers have been removed from the Combat and Combat Support (CH, SL, Doc, CM) role. If that's the case then I'm at a loss on where to start

The CU docs mentioned, briefly, that terrian and movement will have more emphasis in the new combat system perhaps that is a place to start, and to start the ideas rolling for the profession revamp that TH mentioned in his reply to pheonix i think it was. What impact will rangers terrian movement bonuses have on our "secondary
"profession?

This situation reminds me of a wasp's nest that was hit with a stick.
I'm totally confused right now, what is going on here?
