While I didn't notice this RIGHT after reaching Novice Ranger, I did just notice it the other day and it has boggled me as to what it actually means/does/implies. I know it's "got" to be something only Novice Ranger's and up have, since inquiring with friends who have basic harvesting skills in the scout line (if that indeed is a factor for this) and they do not see the numbers.
Basicaly, what I'm referring to is when you examine a creature and beside the harvestable resrouces, hide and meat, next to the type (ie leathery, wooly etc) there is a number in brackets. Something like this
Hide: Corellian Leathery (16)
Meat: Corellian Herbivore (16)
The numbers change depending on the mob, but do not change based on whether a creature is adult or a baby, they remain the same. I figured this was what perhaps you would harvest or could harvest off it. Nope, I've harvested 1 hide with that number but also as much as 18 with that same number.
I'm boggled. Can anyone explain what those numbers mean? Thanks!

The number is the average amount of units someone Without harvesting bonuses will get when they harvest that creature. I can harvest almost twice that amount as a Master Ranger.
Babies will yeild only a small percent of that number, I dont remember what the exact percent is.

Guys,
The number is the base. The base number is then modified by your creature harvesting skill.
Babies give 1/4 of the total modifed number.

That base value is also modified by the creature's fatness, which is why you got 1 unit sometimes ("The creature was skinny.")
